UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADOLF KOHN AND SAMUEL KOHN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNORS OF ONE-THIRD TO LEOPQLD BURGER, OF SAME PLACE.
SAFETY DEVICE FOR LOOKING GAS-COCKS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 527,206, dated October 9, 1894.
Application filed January 23, 1894- Serial No- (N mod l-i To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that we, ADOLF KOHN and SAIYIUEL KOHN, citizens of the United States, reslding in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices for Looking Gas-Cocks, of which the following is a specification. it
Our invention relates to safety devices for locking gas-cocks, whereby when the gas is turned 01f, the cock is positively and safely locked, so that it can only be operated intentionally and cannot through accident be left open so as to waste the gas; and, its object is to provide a simple, efficient and conveniently operated device for that purpose,
whereby the plug of the cock may be una locked simultaneously with the turning of its key. i
Ourinvention consists in a spring-actuated finger-lever which is mounted on the barrel of the cock in such position as that a locking-pin which. projects therefrom may pass through a hole in the barrel and engage in the gas-passage extending through the plu g-valve of the cock, as will be hereinafter particularly described and then specified in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings:Figure 1 is a perspective View of a gas-burner and its cook, the same being provided with our improved safety-device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 2-2, of Fig. 1, showing the plug turned to shut off the gas, and Fig. 3 is a similar section, showing the gas turned on. r
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The drawings represent an ordinary form of gas-burner A, and cook, consisting of the barrel a, key B and the plug B, which turns within the barrel on and is provided with the transverse'gas-passage b.
Our improvement consists in the horizontally arranged catch or finger-lever G which so that a spring E secured to the base of the burner under one end of the lever, may press outwardly on said end and project the locking-pin F on the other, end of the lever into a hole f bored through the side of the barrel a. This hole f is located in the same plane as the gas-passage b of the plug, so that when the latter is turned to shut 0E the gas, said passage will register with said hole and permit the locking-pin F to spring into the passage, thereby securing the cock against being accidentally opened and guarding against the escape of gas.
To turn on the gas it is only necessary to press on the outer end of the catch or lever so as to counteract the pressure of the spring E, thereby removing the locking pin from the gas-passageof the cook and permitting the latter to be freely turned.
The spring E is V-shaped, itsinner end being set into a recess e made in the base of the oted. In this manner the spring is firmly held in position under the lever.
The improvements are applicable to the ordinary form of gas-cock, which is capable of a half-revolution, so that the gas may be turned on in two positions of the key and may be shut off when the key is given a quarter revolution. The key or plug is not affected in the least by the change and the only hole made in addition is that formed in the side of the barrel of the cook. The finger-lever is arranged in such position, i. e. transversely of the plug, as that by a little practice the same may be readily operated simultaneously with the turning of the key, and the operator is thereby enabled to light the match with one hand and turn on the gas with the other in the usual way.
Having thusdescribed our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a gas-cock, consisting of the barrel, the plug and its key, said plug having a gas-passage and said barrel having a hole located in the same plane as the gas passage, and wherewith the latter is adapted to register when the plug is turned, of a spring-actuated lever pivoted on the barrel of the cock and provided with a locking-pin adapted to pass through said hole'and normally engage in either end of said gas-passage, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination,withagas-cock and the burner; said cock consisting of the barrel having a hole in one side, the plug and its key said plug having a gas-passage, of a lever pivoted on the barrel, a V-shaped spring adapted to act on one end of the lever, the
base of said burner having a recess in which the inner end of the spring is permanently.
