BELL PUSH-BUTTON FOR FLOORS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,705, dated January 30, 1894.

Be it known that I, NAHUM J UDSON BUSBY, of Maplewood, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improve ment in Bell Actuators for Floor Use, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters and figures on the drawings representing like parts.

Many people desire for use in floors of dining rooms a device whereby a bell may be rung to call a servant. Consequently many houses are provided with electric push buttons, but many people do not care to go to the expense of maintaining a battery to provide the necessary electric current.

I have aimed to produce a device for floor use which may be used instead of the electric push button, and which may be actuated either by foot or by hand, as I will describe.

The casting or case A adapted to be put into the floor has at its upper end a flange A to rest on the floor, and at its lower end the case has suitable ears A to hold pivots a, for one or more bell crank levers a as may be desired, said bell cranks having suitable openings as a for the attachment of suitable wire or wires, said wire or wires leading, as in ordinary bell hanging, to a suitable hell or bells, the bell cranks being normally kept in the position shown in Fig. 1. The casing A is hollow, and as shown its chambered interior is of two difierent diameters, as at b, b,

' the bottom of the lowermost chamber being partially cut out for the reception of a sleeve or spindle 0 having a flange c, and having its lower end threaded as at c to receive a nut c" to form a stop to determine the extent of upward movement of the sleeve by or through the spring (1 acting on the collar 0'. The sleeve is slotted to receive a stud or projection d to preventits rotation in the case. The upper end of the sleeve has a pin or projection 2 which enters an L-shaped bayonet slot 3, 4, 5, made in the hollow shankof a push piece 6 having a head 6', the flange A preferably having a recess, as e to receive the said head when the push piece is in its lowest position. The spring-supported sleeve 0 and the push piece have each a central passage as 7, 8.

In case it is desired -to work the bell by the push piece the latter will be elevated to occupy the position shown in Fig. 1, and by putting the foot on the push button and depressing it, the sleeve will be pushed down, the spring collapsing, and the end of the sleeve will strike and turn the elbow or bell crank levers to effect the ringing of a bell. If it is desired to ring the bell by hand, then the push piece will be elevated suficiently for the slot 3 to clear the projection 2, and the push piece will then be turned until the part 5 of the bayonet slot is in line with the projection, when the push piece will be dropped with its shank in the chamber or space I), the head c entering the pocket e Now if desired, a cord or wire may be attached to the upper ends of the bell crank levers and be led up through the sleeve and push piece and then carried under the table to the hand of the hostess so that she may pull the cord when desired, as when ringing an ordinary bell by a bell pull, such movement turning the lever or levers for that purpose. When the projection 2 is in the part 3 of the slot in the push piece, the latter is prevented from accidental rotation by the foot, or by the carpet, it may be, lying on the elevated push piece.

The apparatus described may be used in other places than the floor and yet be within the scope of my invention. 1

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

A case, a hollow sleeve, and a hollow push piece, each longitudinally movable in said case, combined with a detachable connection between said sleeve and push piece, whereby they may be moved simultaneously when desired, and a bell-actuating lever having one end adjacent to and in the path of movement of the sleeve, substantially as described.
