DRAW-RIGGING FOR CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 510,828, dated December 12, 1893.
A pplication filed November 19, 1891- Serial No. 412,398. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JOHN W. ALLIsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Penn- Sylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Draw-Riggings for Cars, which improvement is fully set forth in .the following specification and accompanying drawings. My invention consists of, improvements in draw riggings for cars, whereby a strong, du-V rable and effect-ive device is produced, as will be hereinafter set forth.
It also consists of details of construction as will be hereinafter set forth.
Figure l represents a top or plan view of a draw rigging for a car embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal vertical section thereof. Fig. 3 represents a tranverse section on line m, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings: A and B designate the central and intermediate stringers of a car body, and C designates knees which are connected. with the stringers A by means of boltsD. The knees are constructed of wrought metal of the form of channel or angle iron T or I beams, tbc., and the bolts D pass through the flanges of the knees, the stringers and the floor E of the car.
F designates the draw-head and- G designates the securing and connecting bolt thereof, said bolt being encircled by the spring H, the latter being confined between the plates J, J', through which the bolt G passes, said bolt being held in position by means of the key K on the inner end thereof.
Connected with the knees C are stop pieces or shoulders L, L', which project inwardly therefrom, it being noticed that the shoulders L have the plate J abutting against the same to limit the forward movement thereof, while the shoulders L' have the plate J abutting against the same to limit the rearward movement thereof.
M designates an angle iron which is located below the front end sill M' and above the draw-head F, and having its s ides secured to the knees C, it constituting the upper chafing plate with which the draw-head contacts when raised, thus preventing direct engagement of the draw-head with said sill M'. Below the draw-head is a plate N, on which the drawheadj is supported, said plate being riveted to the central portion of the front carrier P, which is a bent piece of metal having its ends connected with the sill M' by means of the bolts P', the lower ends of the knees resting upon said central portion.
Q designates the middle braces which are passed around the under side of the knees C and bolted thereto, and have their ends connected with the stringers B by means of bolts Q', it being seen that owing to the carrier P and the brace Q, the knees are firmly sustained from below and greater strength is added to the structure.
Interposed between the upper and lower flanges of the knees above the place of location of the brace Q are posts or standards Q2, which are bolted to said flanges, thus adding strength to the knees at such place.
R designates angle brackets which are riveted to the inner ends of the knees C, and bolted to the bolster S, thus providing strong connections for the knees with the bolster.
Rivete'd to the upper flanges of the knees are brace-keys T, which rise from the same and enter recesses in the central stringers, thus assisting to prevent longitudinal play of the knees when subjected to draft. This :is furthermore assisted by having the vertical limb or flange of the angularchafing plate M rest against shoulders U on the upper part of the front ends of the knees and against the back of the sill M', as will be seen in Fig. 2, so that the forward thrust of the knees is resisted by the blocks T and the vertical limb of the chafing plate M, which as has been stated is interposed between the shoulders U of the knees and the back of the sill M'. It will be seen that as the knees are formed of metal they possess strength and durability and may be made lighter than wood. They may be readily repaired and if seriously injured they provide an economic feature, in that the metal may be saved, the advantages of which are evident.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The front sill M' and the knees C, in com- ICO bination with the angular chafing plate M, which is located below said sill and :rested against the front shoulders U of said knees and against the back of said sill, substantially as described.
2. The central stringcrs A, the front end sill M and the knees C, in combination with the angular chafing plate M which is located below said sill, secured to said knees and rests against the front shoulders U of said knees and against the back of said sill, and the brace keys T which are secured to said knees and enter recesses in the said stringers, substantially as described.
The front end sill M the front carrier P, which is secured to said sill, and the knees C which are supported by said carrier P, in combination with the bottom plate N which is secured to said carrier, the upper angular chafing plate M which is secured to said knees, and having its vertical limb abutting against the shoulders U of the knees and against the back of said sill, substantially asl described.
4. The middle braces Q, the angular knees C, the stringers A, B, and bolts connecting said parts in combination with the vertical posts Q2 which are located between the anges of said knees and bolted thereto, substantiallyT as described.
5. The middle braces Q, the angular knees C, the stringers A, B, the bolts connecting said parts and the vertical posts between the fianges of said knees and secured thereto, in combination With the bolster S andthe angle brackets R, which are secured to said knees and bolster, substantially as described.
6. The stringers A and B, the knees C, the front end sill M and the draw head F,in coinbination with the front carrier P, which is connected with said sill, the bottom supporting plate N of said draw head, the top chafing plate M, which is secured to said knees and having its vertical limb abutting against the front shoulders U of said knees and back of said sill, the middle braces Q which are bolted to said knees, and the stringers B and the vertical posts Q2 which are firmly secured to the flanges ofthe knees above said central brace Q substantially as described.
7. The stringers A and B, the knees C, the frontend sill M', and the draw head F, in combination with the front carrier P,Which is connected With said sill, the' bottom supporting plate N of said draw head, the top chafng plate M, which is secured to said knees and having its vertical limb abutting against the front shoulders U of said knees and back of said sill, the middle braces Q which are bolted to said knees, the stringers B,the vertical posts Q2 which are firmly secured to the flanges ot' the knees above said central brace Q, the bolster S and the angle brackets R which are first connected with said knees and bolster, substantially as described.
