SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 519,720, dated May 15, 1894. Application filed September 9, 1893- Serial No. 485,173. (No model.)

l 3e it known that I, CLINTON H. LEGGETT, a c tizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements n Powder-Distributers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to powder distributers of the class used for distributing insect powders, wherein an air blast is used to transfer the powder from a reservoir and discharge 1t from a spout onto the plants or trees to which it is to be applied. Such distributors are shown in my United States Patents No. 376,600, dated January 17, 1888, and No. 421,942, dated February 25, 1890; also in my application for patent, Serial No. 478,328, filed June 21, 1893. My present invention is more partlcularly an improvement on the distribuiuzers shown in these patents and said applicaion.
This invention provides certain improvements in the powder reservoir, the valve therefor, the valve adjuster, and the spout of the powder gun, and also provides an improved carrying belt for the person manipulating the gun.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate certain adaptations of 'my invention, Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation, the reservoir being in mid-section, of a powder gun constructed according to the preferred form of my improvements, the supporting belt therefor being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan view of the gun shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the spout shown in Figs. 1 and 2, out on the line 33 in the latter figure. Fig. 4 is an enlarged plan view of the valve adjuster shown in Figs. 1 and 2, showing the valve plate in fragmentary under side plan. Fig. 5 is a cross-section of the valve adjuster cut on the line 5-5 in Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is an under side plan view of the spout shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 7 is an enlarged fragmentary section showing a modified form of valve adjuster. Fig. 8 is an elevation of the supporting belt.
Referring to the drawings, I will now describe in detail the preferred form of my invention.
As usual, the apparatus consists of a blower A, an air tube B receiving air from said blower at one end and having a delivery spout C at its other end, a powder reservoir E on said tube having an agitator F, and a valve I for supplying powder to the tube, and gearing H for driving the fan of the blower and oscillating the agitator.
According to my invention I provide an improved body belt to be worn by the person carrying the powder gun. This consists of a breast plate a, preferably of leather, and having vertical lateral wings b, and an adjustable strap 0 fastened as by the rivetseto the front face of the plate a at opposite sides of the center thereof, in such manner as to leave a loop or pocket f between the strap and plate, while the ends of the strap extend beyond the plate to permit their passage around the body of the person wearing the belt. In this manner when the belt is in place at the Waistof the wearer, the gun may be very conveniently supported therefromby passing its usual hook 9 into the pocket f of the belt, whereupon the gun can be moved to all positions relatively to the user, while its blower end will be supported and guided by its hook g.
Another feature of my invention consists in constructing the perforated bottom plate hot the reservoir in the form of an arc of a circle having an axis parallel with and preferably corresponding with that of the shaft 2' of the agitator, and constructing the perforated valve plate I in the form of an arc of a circle having the same axis as the plate 71., whereby greater room for relative movement of the valve plate on the bottom plate is obtained than would be the case were the two plates straight. A guide plate 3' engaging the edges of the valve plate I serves to retain it in place. The plate I is moved by an adjusting rod K, which has a parallel longitudinal movement, and is connected to the plate at its inner end by a flexible connection L consisting of a tin tag is soldered at one end to the under side of the plate I, and embracing in an eye at its other end the central looped portion of a wire Z, the two ends of which embrace the opposite sides of and are soldered to the rod K. Thus as the plate I moves around, the connection L yields sufliciently to compensate for the slight difierence between the are through which the plate moves and the line through which the rod moves.

Another feature of my invention consists in an improved indicator for showing the condition of the valve plate at all times. This preferably is adjacent to the adjuster for the valve, so that the operator can readily see when the desired position is reached. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 5, my improved indicator consists of a register-plate M, having an aperture 171. corresponding in size to the width of the holes n in the valve plate I, which plate M is rigidly fixed in the fixed nut-bracket N of the adjuster, while an indicator O rigidly fixed to the adjusting rod K, is disposed relatively to the hole m in the plate in such manner that when the rod has drawn the plate I to the completely open position, the indicator 0 will rest with its front edge p flush with the rear edge q of the aperture m, thereby showing the latter entirely open, from which it will be known that the corresponding holes 'n in the valve plate I are exactly opposite their respective holes in the bottom plate h of the reservoir, and that therefore the valve is fully open. As the register rod is adjusted, the indicator 0 will advance across the aperture m, indicating by the portion thereof covered, the extent of closure of When complete closure is reached, the aperture m will be completely closed by the indicator 0, and at this point,
as well as in the maximum open position, the
indicator will serve as a stop against further movement of the valve by abutting against the posts 7' of the bracket N, which posts preferably embrace the front and rear edges of the plate M at opposite sides of the bar K. The nut-bracketN is preferably an elongated bracket fixed to the air tube B, and having a longitudinal groove 5 traversing its entire length, and receiving and substantially inclosing the adjusting rod K in all its positions. The bracket has a cross curve t for the adjusting nut P, beyond which itis constructed with the vertical legs 0" which carry the plate M, and between which the indicator 0 is fixed on the adjusting rod K. The top face of the indicator is preferably flat, and by contacting with the under face of the plate M, prevents rotation of the rod K.
Another feature of my invention consists in constructing the reservoir Ewith a flaring mouth Q having an internal screwthread receiving an external screwthreaded cap, or other suitable closure R. In this manner the reservoir can be very easily filled with the powder to be used.
According to my invention I provide certain improvements in the spout for the gun whereby it is more effective and complete in its distribution of the powder than has heretofore been the case. Thisimprovement consists in constructing a preferably removable and adjustable spout, closed at one side, open at its other side, and constructed to spread and deflect the discharge laterally from its open side. Preferably this is accomplished by the construction shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 6, wherein the spout O has a tube-socket u fitting over the air tube, and a shell v fixed at one end to said socket, open at one side. This shell has aclosed wall to at its opposite side constructed with curved diverging flanges a; of substantially the depth of said socket to, running from the latter outwardly and laterally, and terminating in lateral openings y, and a cross-flange zextend ng at rlght angles across its upper end, curving in like manner to and to substantially the same depth as the flanges 0c, and an intermediate deflector S consisting of a wall substantially perpendicular to the closed wall w, soldered thereon, of approximately the same depth as the flanges a3, and starting at a point opposite the outlet of the nozzle to, and continuing outwardly therefrom at opposite sides toward the openings y. Thus the discharge into the spout is divided by the deflector and passes between the walls thereof and the flanges a: to and out through the openings y, being in its said passage deflected laterally by the curve of said flanges and by the downward curve of the flange Z out through the open side of the spout, and being extensively distributed as it is thus discharged. in this ,way the discharge can be distributed over two rows of plants when the gun is held between such rows, and the spout can be moved to bring its open side either above, at side of, or below the plant, in such manner that the discharge shall be down thereon, laterally thereagainst, or upwardly thereunder, as desired. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the spout is arranged for a downward discharge.
It will be seen that my invention provldes an improved powder gun which can be conveniently utilized for distributing insect pow der, and it will be understood that the invention is not limited to the exact features of construction and arrangement hereinbeforespec1- fled as its preferred form, as these maybe modified in some respects without departing from the essential features of the invention.
Fig. 7 shows a modification of the valve indicating and adjusting devices, in whlch the rod lettered K carries the indicator 0 opposite a register plate M, while the means for adjusting the rod are independent of the indicating device, and consist in this instance of a nut P engaging the rod and working on a special screw a.
I claim as my invention the following-defined novel features, substantially as hereinbefore specified, namely:
1. In a powder distributor, a blower and an air tube, in combination with a spout for said tube consisting of a shell carried at the end thereof, having an imperforate upper side, an entirely open under side, and flanged downwardly inclined edges around said open side, and a deflector carried by said shell between its flanged edges, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a spout for powder distributors, a nozzle for attachment to the air tube of the distributer, and a shell carried by said nozzle and consisting of a closed diverging wall to at the upper side, having at its edges downwardly inclined flanges w and z, and entirely open at its under side, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A spout for powder distributers, consisting of a nozzle u, and a diverging shell 1;, entirely open at its under part, said shell having downwardly inclined flanges 00 at its side edges, and downwardly inclined flanges .2 at its end edge, and openings 1 between said flanges, and a V-shaped deflector S carried at the under side of said shell opposite said nozzle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a powder distributer the combination with the air tube and powder reservoir, of a valve in the latter, an externally projecting rod K for adjusting said valve, and an indicator 0 carried by said rod and showing the position of said valve.
5. In a powder distributer, the air tube, reservoir and valve therefor, in combination with a plate M having an aperture m, and an indicator O engaging said plate, a valve-rod K connected to the valve and carrying said indicator, and stops r carrying said plate and abutting against said indicator.
6. In a powder distributer, the air tube and reservoir, in combination with a valve plate I for controlling discharge from said reservoir, an adjusting rod K for said plate, and a flexible connection L between said rod and plate.
7. In a powder distributer, the air tube, reservoir, and fan casing, in combination with a hook g on the latter, and a belt J, for the body of the user of the distributer, having a breast plate a, and a strap 0 receiving said hook g, for supporting the distributer.
