SHOE-BUTTQNER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 518,619, dated April 24, 1894.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DANIEL I'I. MUIR, of Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Buttoners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in shoe buttoners, the object being to provide a simple and inexpensive device which maybe operated by one hand, one which will give a straight pull to the button being operated upon and which in consequence will lessen the liability of pulling off buttons or tearing theleather or button holes.

A further object is to provide a device which may be manipulated to advantage without the necessity of bending the body very much if at all.

With these ends in view my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a View in perspective of my improved shoe buttoner. Fig. 2 is a section and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the central portion showing the means for opening and closing the jaws.

A represents a sleeve which constitutes the main portion of the buttoner.

B is a rod which passes through the sleeve loosely and is adapted to slide therein. This rod is provided with a handle 1 on its outer end and at its inner end terminates in afoot this spring has the eft'eot of normally raising the foot or claw to the lower end of the sleeve where it stops owing to the fact that the size of the claw or foot is greater than the bore of the sleeve. Passing loosely through the sleeve are the shanks 5, 5, of the two jaws 6, o. These jaws are adapted to normallylie flat together to facilitate their insertion into a button hole and in order to the more conveniently receive a button they are prefer ably open or recessed through their interiors. These jaws are capable of being swung open and shut axially to receive and hold a button between them and to accomplish this swinging most convenientlyalever 7 is pivoted to the upper end of the sleeve in position to receive two fingers of the operator. The upper ends of the shanks of the jaws are bent laterally as at 8, 8, and they extend loosely through holes 9, 9, in the ears 10, 10, formed on lever 7 so that as the lever is rocked these ends 8, 8, are rocked and in consequence the jaws are opened or closed.

In operation the jaws are inserted in the button hole, the operator holding his first and second fingers upon the lever and his thumb upon the handle, he pressing upon the end of the lever which holds the jaws closed. Then to open the jaws the opposite end is pressed until the jaws separate and the button is caught between them. Then the jaws are closed and the rod pushed down so that the button is given a pull and the leather with the button hole therein given a push. In this manner the buttoning is done without any twisting or turning, simply by astraight pull.

The loops or jaws could be made of greater length, or the other parts could be made longer so that the device could be operated without bending the body.

It is also evident that other slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and hence I do not Wish to limit myself to the exact construction herein set forth, but,

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a buttoner, the combination with a body portion, and jaws connected therewith and capable of rocking axially relative thereto, of a rocking lever pivoted to the body and connected with the jaws for rocking them, substantially as set forth. y

2. In a buttoner, the combination with a body portion, of a pair of rocking jaws or loops, a lever for operating the jaws, and a sliding rod having a foot or, claw thereon adapted to engage the material in which the button hole is formed in the operation of buttoning, substantially as set forth.

3. In a buttoner, the combination with a body portion and aepair of rocking jawsor loops the shanks of which have laterally bent ends, of a finger lever pivoted to the body portion, said lever connected loosely with the ends of the shanks whereby the jaws or loops are operated by the swinging of the lever, substantially as set forth.
