UNITED STATES PATENT @FFECE.
I ALFRED C. NISSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
fiPECIPIGAlION forming part of Letters Patent No. 515,872, dated March 6, 1894.
Application filed March 29, 1893.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED O.N1ssoN, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Book, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in that variety of books which have detachable covers, and in which the filler or body portion of the book is usually of printed paper adapted to be removed when the paper has been all written over.
The object of myinvention is to produce a book of this kind, or more particularly, a cover and binder for such books which permits economy of paper, as the paper may be written upon close up to the back of the book, which also is very durable, ontlasting many dozen fillers, thus saving expense to consumers, and which is constructed in such a way that the filler may be easily and quickly inserted or removed.
To these ends, my invention consists in certainfeatures of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter describedand claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a closed book embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a broken perspective view of the covers and binder, showing the covers thrown open and the filler removed. Fig. 3 is a broken perspective view of the back end of the filler, and Fig. 4: is a broken detail view of the metallic binding strip which is placed upon the edges of the covers.
The book is provided with stiff covers 10, which are preferably of vulcanized fiber, as this material keeps smooth and clean and has the necessary stiiiness, and the covers are connected together by .a flexible strip 11, which forms the book back, and which is held between the plates 12 and 13 of the clamp which holds the filler between the covers. The plate 12 extends along the back and outer side of the strip 11, and serves as a name plate on which the name of the owner of the Serial No. 468,188- (No model.)
book may be placed, as shown in Fig. 1, and this plate has flanges 14 at its ends which project forward parallel with the edges of the covers, and on one of the flanges is a brad 15, which projects inward parallel with the clamp plates 12 and 13. In the other flange is a screw 16, threaded to turn in the flange, and this has a pointed end 17 which serves as a brad, and a milled head 18 to enable it to be turned readily. The brad 15 is adapted to project into one edge of the filler and the screw brad 16, 17, into the opposite edge, thus binding the book or filler to the clamp and between the covers. The plates 12 and 13 may be provided with an eyelet 19, as shown in Figs. land 2; and the strip 11 may be perforated opposite the eyelet to enable the number of the filler to be seen. when such filleris numbered.
The filler 20 is composed of blank or other paper, the sheets being bound together at the back, at which point the book or filler is encircled by a band or tape 21. This tape is adapted to come opposite the brads 15, and 16, 17,and enables the filler to be held firmly in place.
The edges of the covers 10 are provided with a metallic binding strip 22, which is folded over said edges, and this strip is made in a continuous piece, being cut into on opposite sides, as shown at 23, at points coincident with the corners of the covers, so thatit may fold smoothly around the covers. The ends of the strip are covered by smooth binding strips 24, which are folded over the ends of the strips 22 and riveted to the covers, and the outer corners of the covers may be similarly protected if desired. Onone of the covers is a leaf-holder of substantially the usual kind, adapted to he slipped between the leaves of the book at any desired place, and this leaf-holder comprises a cross rod or wire 25 and springs 26, which carry the rod and which are secured to opposite edges of one of the covers.
When the filler 20 is to be placed between the covers, the screw 16 is removed; the filler placed with its back against the plate 13, the brad 15 pushed through the tape 21 at one edge of the filler, and the screw 16 screwed back into the flange let so that its point will project into the opposite edge of the filler, and the two brads in connection with the covers and the flanges 14, hold the filler securely in place. It will be seen that the means of attachment is very simple, and that the filler may be very easily removed and a new one substituted whenever it is necessary.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the stiff covers, the flexible back uniting the covers, the filler adapted to be held between the covers, the clamp secured to the flexible back and having flanges projecting parallel with the edges of the covers, said clamp comprising two plates between which passes the said flexible back-a fixed brad on one flange to enter the filler, and a detachable brad on the opposite flange to enter the filler, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the'stifi covers, the flexible back uniting the covers, the clamp secured to the flexible back and comprising parallel plates which embrace the back, the clamp having end flanges adapted to embrace a filler, the filler held between the covers and flanges, the clamp plates and the back being provided with registering openings to disclose a portion of the back of the filler, a fixed brad on one of the flanges to enter the filler, and a detachable screw brad on the 0pposite flange to enter the filler, substantially as specified.
ALFRED c. NISSON.
