NITED STATES PATENT turion.
WILLIAM H. PAYNE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
FASTENING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 515,094, dated February 20, 1894.
Application tiled April 8, 1893. Sen'al No. 4691513- (NO model') To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, WILLIAM H. PAYNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification. l
My invention has relation to that class o devices adapted for fastening pamphlets, documents or similar articles together; and it relates more particularly to the general construction and arrangement of such a fastening device.
' The principal objects of my invention are first, to provide a simple, durable, inexpensive and eective fastening device for holding or supporting documents, pamphlets and like articles firmly together; second, to provide a fastening device so constructed as that the same may be applied to pamphlets or other similar documents without puncturing or disfiguring the same in any manner and so that the article may be readily detached therefrom; and third; to provide a fastening device for ready application to a document or other similar article and so as to be clamped thereto without in any manner affecting the ready release of the same therefrom, when required.
My invention consists of a fastening device constructed and arranged substantially in the manner hereinafter described and claimed.
The nature and general features of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof; and in which- Figure l, is a top view of the fastening device in blank as stamped or punched out and embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2, is a plan view of a document provided with a series of leaves held firmly together by means of a fastening device of my invention; and Fig. 3, is a similar view of the fastening device having the operative parts partially bent in order to illustrate the manner in which the same is secured to the corner of a pamphlet or other article, for maintaining the leaves or pages thereof, when the parts of the device are pressed or completely bent thereto and thereon.
Referring to the drawings a, is a blank stamped or punched out to form aclip or fastener provided with an inverted triangular or similar shaped body a, having a straight edge or guide a2, integral with flaring arms a3 and a4, and with a tongue a5. The straight edge a2, of the body portion of the clip or fastener serves as a guide over which and onto the surface of the body a', is bent the series of leaves of the pamphlet or other document c, at the corner thereof as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, and the tongue a5, is then bent forward over and around the same so as to occupy a position in contact with the back and the flaring arms a3 and ot, are bent into the position illustrated in Fig. 2, with the free ends in contact with the back adjacent to the position occupied by the tongue at the back of the pamphlet or document and firmly held to position without fear of the series of leaves being released therefrom until the several prongs or arms and tongue are caused to assume respectively positions such as illustrated in Fig. 3.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A fastening device for pamphlets and the like, comprising a stamped or punched body a', provided with a straight edge a2, and ilaring arms a3 and a4, and a tongue a5, the construction being such that said straight edge serves as a gage over which and onto the body of the device is bent the leaves at the corner of the pamphlet or like article and said tongue adapted to be bent forward over and around the same so as to assume a position in contact with the back and said flaring arms adapted to be bent into such position as that the free ends contact with the back adjacent to the position of the device in contact with the bent leaves of the pamphlet or like article.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM H. PAYNE. Witnesses:
