WILLIAM E. MURBARGER, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
COMBINED UMBRELLA TIE AND NAME-PLATE.
SIPEGIFIGATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,565, dated February 13, 1894.
Application filed January 13, 1893. Serial No. 458,280. on model.)
To 60% whom it may concern:
BeitknownthatI,WILLIAMEMURBARGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Umbrella Holder and Name-Plate; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention consists in a novel umbrella clasp or holder which is permanently attached to the handle of an umbrella, so that it cannot be lost or mislaid and is always in position ready for instant use, and which provides a name-plate for the name of the owner; and the invention will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the inven tion, showing it before attachment to an umbrella handle. Fig. 2 shows the device attached to an umbrella handle. Fig. 3 shows the holder clasped around the umbrella. Fig. at is a plan view of Fig. 1 with the chain removed.
The same numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the several parts by their designating numerals, 1 indicates the body of the device, which may be formed of any suitable material, but is preferably formed of thin curved spring metal, the outer side of which forms a name-plate, 2, for the reception of the name of the owner. This part of the device is connected permanently to the handle of an umbrella by a small chain 3, or by a cord or spiral spring or any equivalent connection; the outer end of said chain being preferably provided with a small neat screw, 4, which can be screwed into the handle at the proper point, as shown. The other end of the chain preferably connects with an eye or perforated log, 5, with which the body 1 is provided. One end of the plate 1 is formed with retaining lips, 6, adapted to engage withthe small locking head, 7. In Figs. 1, 2, and 3 of the drawings I have shown this lockinghead 7 secured to the outer end of a spiral spring, 8, which extends from that end of the body-platel; the inner part of the spring being incased, preferably, in a curved brass tubing, 9, secured on the inner side of the curved plate 1, as shown in Fig. 1.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that my invention consists in a novel umbrella holder which is permanently attached to the handle of an umbrella so that it cannot be lost or mislaid and is always in position ready for instant use, and which provides a name-plate for the name or initials of the owner.
Various minor changes in the construction of the several parts of the device can of course be made without departing from the spirit of my invention; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. A device for holding umbrellas closed comprising an elastic metal plate having at one end a tubular socket, a spiral spring secured at one end in said socket and provided at its other end with an enlarged head, said plate being provided at its other end with a pair of inturned lips adapted to receive and hold the enlarged head of the spring substantially as set forth.
2. A device for holding umbrellas closed comprising an elastic metal plate having at one end a tubular socket, a spiral spring secured at one end in said socket and provided at its other end with an enlarged head, said plate being provided at its other end with a pair of inturned lips adapted to receive and hold the enlarged head of the spring and at its center with an eye and a chain engaging said eye and adapted to be secured to the umbrella handle, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
