COMBINED BOTTLE-STOPPER FASTENING AND EXTRACTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 507,669, dated October 31, 1893.
Application filed January 14, 1893- Serial No. 458,401- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE FRENCH AT- WOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Melrose Highlands, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Bottle-Stopper Fastening and Extractor; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to means for fastening and extracting bottle stoppers and it consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of devices to effect said objects, as hereinafter specified and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, represents a perspective view of a bottle stopper with my fastening and extracting de vices attached. Fig. 2, is a sectional view of a bottle neck with my apparatus secured thereto and on duty. Fig. 3, is a detailview of the button for twisting the ends of theneck encircling loop, removed, and Figs. 4, and 5, are modifications of the neck encircling loop.
In constructing my improvements I first form a button'preferably of wood, marked a, and perforate it diametrically to receive a wire in the manner shown in Fig. 2. I then take a single strand of wire I), and pass it through said button a, and draw each end outward until the button rests on the mid dle of said wire. The button a, is then placed on the bottom of a cork stopper 0, and the free ends of the Wire are passed upward, one on each side of such cork, thereby form ing a loop in which the cork is held. After the free ends of the wire b, reach the top of the cork, I pass them across the same as shown and bend them so as to form the loops 6, after which I carry them up and-pass them through and fixedly connect them to the turning piece or lever d, as better shown in Fig. 1. The loops e, of the wire I), are designed and adapted to receive the wire loop g, which is placed in position about the neck of a bottle after the cork has been put in the mouth of the same, as illustrated. This loop g, has its ends passed through the separated eyes of aturn button f, as shown; and it will thus be seen that when the said button is turned, the ends will be twisted and the loop will be tightened about the bottle neck so that it cannot be casually removed therefrom. Aften the loop g, is tightened upon the bottle neck, the button (1, is turned so as to twist the wire I), when the cork will be securely fastened in position.
To remove the cork it is simply necessary to untwist the ends of the loop b, so that it will take-over the head of the bottle, when the cork may be readily withdrawn through the medium of the button (1, and wire I).
In Figs. 4, and 5, of the drawings, I have illustrated modifications of the loop g.
In Fig. 4, the modification is in the form of a loop or broken band g, of spring metal. This loop or band 9, is designed to be spread and placed upon a bottle neck, and it is adapted to serve the same functions as the loop g.
The modification shown in Fig. 5, also comprises a loop or broken band 12, of spring metal, and it is provided at its ends with logs or branches 4., whereby it may be readily spread and removed from a bottle neck.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a stopper fastener and extractor, the combination of the wire b, adapted to be looped longitudinally around a stopper and having the loops e, and also having its ends passed through and fixedly connected to a turning piece or lever d, the said lever d, adapted to twist and untwist the wire b, and also adapted to serve as a hand-grasp, and a loop or band adapted to be mounted upon the neck of a bottle and engage the loops 6, of the wire I), substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a stopper fastener and extractor, the combination of a stopper, the button a, adapted to rest against the bottom of the stopper, the wire I), passed throught the button a, and looped around the stopper and having the loops e, a button d, connected to the free ends of' the wire I), a wire loop g, adapted to be mounted upon a bottle neck and passed through the loops e, anda twisting button mounted on the ends of said loop g, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
