EDGING OR BORDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 507,236, dated October 24, 1893. Application filed May 8, 1891. Renewed May 26, 1893. Serial No, 475.637. (No model.)

To all whom t may concern: Be it known that l, JOSEPH M. MERROW, of Merrow,in the county of Tolland and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Edging or Border; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

This invention relates to improvements in that class of edgings or borders for fabrics described and claimed in another application, Serial No. 391,120 (covering improvements upon the edging claimed in application, Serial No. 309,386) wherein a chain is formed or disposed in loops or festoons along the edge of a base or fabric and united thereto by certain of the stitches of the chain engaging the base, with a supplemental cord incorporated in the said chain beyond the edge of the base and secured in place by certain of the stitches of the chain embracing in Whole or in part said supplemental cord; and my said invention consists in the novel and improved form or construction of such a border or edging, or the yspecial variety thereof, in which one or more supplemental cords is thrown into the chain at two or more points in the loops or festoons, to connect the sides of the latter and unite the series of loops or festoons, as hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings: Figure lis a diagrammatic View of one form of border or edging illustrating the structure thereof. Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the application of a second cord to the structure shown in Fig. l.

My improved border or edging is composed of three principal elements, to wit, a-base A, a chain B and a supplemental cord C; to which may be added one or more additional cords C. WhatI term the base may be composed of any suitable fabric or material to the edge of which the chain is to be attached, and said edge may be either a raw or a finished edge, such as is ordinarily formed by folding, hemming, over-seaming or otherwise finishing or protecting the edge of the fabric.

The chain B may be composed of one or more threads enchained in any well known manner, as by crocheting, knitting or otherwise manipulating them, either by hand or by proper crocheting, knitting or sewing mechanlsm.

The cord C, so called, is not necessarily composed of strands, but may consist of any flexible material, such as a chain, tape, cord or filament, and in the drawings, I have, for the purposes of illustration shown three forms, a chain in Fig. 1, and a cord and a braid in Fig. 2.

The chain B is attached at intervals to the base by the inclusion of a portion of the margin within certain of the stitches b of the chain, thus forming festoons or loops B along the margin of the base A.

The cord C extending lengthwise of, but at a distance from, the edge of the base is connected to the latter by being included or embraced, in whole or in part, and at more vor less remote intervals, in certain of the stitches comprising the loop B', said cord C being thus caused to connect the two side bars of the loop at a point beyond the edge of the fabric and to connect contiguous loops of the chain C as represented in the drawings. In this Way the loops or festoons formed by the attachment of chain B to the base are intersected, contiguous loops held together and the whole finish reinforced by the inclusion of cord C at two or more points in chain B within the loops or festoons B.

It is obvious that the form or design of the border or edging may be changed by varying the points of attachment of cord C to the chains forming loops B and by varying the tension of the cord or its length between the points of attachment. Thus in Fig. 2, wherein a plurality of cords are shown one of said cords C is laid substantially parallel with the base, while the other C is slack between points of attachment to chain B and is drawn out in the form of loops to or beyond the loops B. In this way a strong and durable edging or border may be formed, one having considerable body and an ornamental appearance, and it can be cheaply and easily constructed inasmuch as but a single crocheting operation or mechanism is necessary, t'. e.,

that for forming and attaching chain B, the cord C being thrown in at the desired points IDO so that it will be included in whole or in part within one or more of the stitches composing said chain.

When a cord C in the form of a chain is employed it may be made separated and supplied during the formation of chain B, or it may be made simultaneously or upon the same machine for producing and applying chain B, the cord or the thread of which it is composed being thrown in at the proper intervals so as to be included within and embraced by the stretches of chain B.

In my prior application, Serial No. 309,386, I have claimed broadly a trimming or edging composed of a base, a cord or chain extending in loops or festoons along the edge and united thereto, and a supplemental chain extending longitudinally of the base and connected to the loops by the inclusion of the latter within certain stitches of said supplemental chain; and in another application, Serial No. 391,120, I have reserved broadly a form or construction of trimming or edging and the method of making the same, comprising a base, a seriesof loops or festoons made from a chain and connected to the base by the inclusion of a portion of the base within certain of the stitches of said chain,with a supplemental cord thrown into and included within certain of the stitches of said chain; my present invention is restricted therefor to that form or variety of trimming, falling Within both of said applications, wherein the cord is thrown in at two points in the loops or festoons and serves to connect the two side bars of each loop and the side bars of contiguous loops or festoons.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- 1. As a new article of manufacture, the

hereinbefore described improved border or edging consistingessentiall y of a base, achain arranged in festoons or loops along the base and connected to the edge thereof by certain stitches of the chain penetrating the base, and a cord extending longitudinally of the base and engaged at two or more points in the loops or festoons by being included in certain of the stitches of the chain; substantially as described.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a bor der or edging for fabrics composed of a base A; a chain B secured in loops or festoons to the base by the inclusion of a portion of the base within certain of the stitches forming the chain; and a plurality of cords extending lengthwise of the base and crossing the said loops or festoons at two points, said cords bcing included in part within certain of the stitches forming the chain B; substantially as described.

3. As a new article of manufacture, the herein described border or edging comprising a base A, a chain B, secured to the base by certain of its stitches including a portion of the base, to form loops or festoons B', a cord C extendinglongtudinally of the base, crossing the loops or festoons B and connected to the latter by the stitches of the chain B; and a supplemental cord C also connected to the loops B by being included in certain of the stitches of chain B, and extending in loops or festoons to or beyond the loops B; substantially as described.
