SIPTING BAG.
No 506,982. Patented 001;. 17, 1893.
Invert/01 .Pairtlck Diamond UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PATRICK DIAMOND, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
S-lFTlNG-BAG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 506,982, dated October 17, 1893.
Application filed May 12,1893.
T0 0. whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PATRICK DIAMOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in sifting-Bags, of which the following is a specification.
The object of 'my invention is to provide a bag for fine granular or powdered material, which bag will serve to securely retain the material while the same is in stock or during shipment, but can also be used asa means of sifting the material from the bag when the latter is in use. This object I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, is a perspective view of my improved bag showing the same sealed. Fig.- 2, is a similar view showing the bag open for sifting purposes; and Fig. 3, is a longitudinal section of the bag showing the same sealed.
The body A of the bag may be madein any of the usual ways and may be of paper or fabric of any available character, the bag being suitably sealed after it is filled. I
In one side of the bag near the top are formed one or more openings 0!. of a size sufficient to permit the contents of the bag to be sifted through the same,
When the bag is in stock, or during transportation, this perforated portion of the bag is covered by a flap B which is lightly sealed to the outer side of the bag, the sealing band extending around the perforated space so as to inclose the latter and prevent any escape therefrom. The flap has a projecting tab 1) which serves as a ready means of catching hold of the fi'ap when it is desired to usethe bag, the sealing portion of the flap being torn loose so as to expose the perforations and permit of the discharge of the contents of the bag through the latter. If desired, the flap B may be of a different color from the body of the bag so as to indicate the portion which is to be removed and simplify the directions for such removal.
My improved bag provides a cheap and convenient means of packing powdered laundry Serial No. 473.909. (No model.)
blue, spices, seeds,or other powdered or granuiar substances which in use it is preferable to sift or discharge in small quantities, the contents of the bag being securely retained until the flap is torn off so as to expose the perforations.
I am aware that boxes for containing powdered or granular material have been provided with perforated tops upon which removable caps or covers were pasted or otherwise secured, and I am also aware that sachet bags have been provided with perforated sides, the perforations in thelatter case, however, being self-closing and being opened by stretching or distending the bag, a construction which, of course, is not admissible in paper bags such as I use, and in which, therefore, the escape of the contents of the bag is prevented by providing the flap with a sealing band surrounding the perforated portion of the bag.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A sifting bag sealed to retain its contents and having, in one side of the body thereof a series of perforations, said body also having a flap folded over said perforations, and provided with a sealing band which extends around the series of perforations and serves to secure the flap to the body of the bag, substantially as specified.
2. A'siftingbagsealed to retain its contents, and having in one side of the body thereof a series of perforations, said body also having a flap folded over said perforated portion, and having a sealing band surrounding the same, and a tab projecting beyond said sealing band whereby the flap may be torn from its place in order to expose the perforations, substantially as specified. I
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' PATRICK DIAMOND.
