Description

wENDELL WRIGHT, `OE CINCINNATI, oHIo. Y
DEVICE Eon yOPENING ANI) YCLOSING WINIJc ivsmaIiIN'ns.`
specification 'of Letters raferie No. 5,062, dated April 10,1847.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WENDELL WRIGHT, of
Cincinnati, in the county ofv Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Hinge, the objects of which are to com-y bine with the oilices of hinge those of an apparatus for opening, closing, and fastening back the shutter or securing it in any required position while the sash is closed; and I do hereby declare that the fo-llowing is a full, clear, and exact description of construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a back elevation of the hinge and its appurtenances. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of another form of the same kind of hinge. Fig. 4 is a vertical section through the same at the lower end.
(a.) is a plate of brass or other metal intended to be boxed into the window frame.
(15, 16) are two staples or guides, to retain the lever in its place.
(14, 14,) are two lugs which serve as fulcrums to the lever. The lever consists of two parts (n, 0,) the limb (0) having dowels which lit into the sockets of the limb (a). The limb (n) at its inner end carries a screw handle (79) by which it is manipulated, and both limbs at their outer extremities form pivots (12) that support a link (m) which also consists of two pieces (10, 11) locking into each other as shown. This link lits easily on a spiral (c) furnished with a butt (cl) like that of a common hinge to fasten it to the shutter. The lower end of the spiral terminates in a pivot (e) for which a socket (f) let into the sill is provided. This socket has at top a flange (r) projecting inward, and is open at one side to admit the pivot (e) whose ear (g) retains it in the socket but is so situated as to be opposite the opening in thersocket when the shutter is wide open'whieh can then be taken out. The center of the spiral maybe on a line with that of t-he upper hinge which may be one `of ordinary construction.
Operation: If the shutter is to be closed. Raise the handle-the outer end of the lever acting on the spiral imparts a swing inward to the shutter, of course a movement in the opposite direction will open the shutter, whichkcan either be opened wide or ajar and by screwing the handle can be retained in any position at the option of the operator.
Figs. 3 and 4 present a form of hinge on the same principle-but the lever is in one, and the movable link is dispensed with being superseded by the bent form of the lever (A) and a key (b) .passing through slots therein. This key has beveled faces (20) which in conjunction with the pressureof the butt end (18) against the edge (19) of the plate when t-he lever is screwed tight in force the key against the spiral and `hold it fast. The spiral and butt are cast in one piece, and the hubs (ji/16, y,) are castonto the plate (y). The catch (g) locks into ther notch when the handle is y screwed tight.
. What I claim herein as new and desire t0 secure by Letters Patent is The within described combination of the apparatus for uniting to the oiiice of hinge, those of the manipulation of the shutter when the sash is closed, by arrangement of spiral and the connecting lever with its appurtenances of link, screw handle, &c., after the manner or scribed.
