BOTTLE-SEALING DEVICE,

SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 491,433, dated February 7, 1893.

Be it known that I, ELMORE P. LYNN, of Cincinnati, county of Hamilton, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Sealing Devices; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,in which like figures refer to like parts.

My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in the construction of bottle sealing devices, and will be understood from the following description.

In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of my improved bottle. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same on the line :cn:, Fig, 1. Fig. 3 is a view of the end of the bottle neck with the lid of the cap removed. l ig. is a central vertical section of a bottle corresponding to Fig. 2 and showing the cap with a roughened or irregular interior surface.

In detail, 1 is the body of the bottle, 2 the neck, and 3 is an annular flange about the neck for the support of the cap t.

5 is a lid attached to the cap by the connecting legs 6.

7 is the neck of the bottle above the annular flange 3, which has corrugations about the outside 10.

8 is the cement or other sealing material filled in between the side of the cap and the neck of the bottle.

9 is a cork, and 11 a seat made of paper, or of any suitable material placed over the mouth of the bottle after the cork is inserted to prevent the sealing material from contacting with the lid of the cap The lid is so attached to the body of the cap by the connecting legs 6 as to be readily broken when struck a slight blow. The cap is preferably made of porcelain, but can be made of any other suitable material.

The object of my bottle sealing device is to seal a bottle of the ordinary kind so that the same cannot be opened or the contents interfered with without breaking off the lid 5, which will show that the seal has been mutilated, and thus furnish a protection which is not furnished by the mere insertion of a cork, and yet for most purposes a perfect bottle remains after such lid is removed.

After a bottle is made in the ordinary way and filled, the cork 9 is inserted, the cap is inverted, a seat made of paper or other suitable material is laid in the bottom of the inverted cap and cement or other suitable sealing material placed inside the cap, and the neck of the bottle forced down into the cap so that the sealin g material will fill the space between the sides of the cap and the neck of the bottle, the cap resting snugly upon the annular flange 3, so that no one can reach the sealing material after the bottle has been sealed. The outside of the neck of the bottle above the annular flange 3, as well as the inside of the cap 4, can be corrugated, or made in any desired form, so that the sealing material when filled in will prevent the cap from being slipped off the neck of the bottle.

' hat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is the following: 1. In a bottle, a sealing device consisting of a cap adapted to fit over the mouth and neck of the same, suitable sealing material between the sides of the cap and neck of the bottle, the lid of such cap so supported on the body thereof that it Will break off when struck,

such lid separated from the sealing material by aseat made of any suitable material, substantially as shown and described.

2. In a bottle, a sealing device consisting of a cap adapted to fit over the mouth and neck of the same, the lower part of such cap resting upon an annular flange around the neck of such bottle, suitable sealing material between the sides of the cap and neck of the bottle, the lid of such cap so supported on the body thereof that it will break off when struck, such lid separated from the sealing material by a seat made of any suitable material, substantially as shown and described.

3. In a bottle, a sealing device consisting of a cap adapted to it over the mouth and neck of the same, the inside of such cap having a roughened surface, suitable sealing material between the sides of the cap and neck of the bottle, the lid of such cap so supported on the body thereof that it will break off when struck, such lid separated from the sealing material by a seat made of any suitable material, substantially as shown and described.

In a bottle, a sealing device consisting of a cap adapted to fit over the mouth and neck of the bottle, the lower part of such cap resting upon an annular flange around the neck of the bottle, suitable sealin g material between the sides of the cap and neck of the bottle, the lid on such cap supported on the sides of the same by legs which can be readily broken, such lid separated from the sealing material by a seat made of any suitable material,

whereby the bottle is sealed and can be opened only after breaking off such lid, substantially as shown and described.

5. In a bottle, a sealing device consisting of a cap with the inside thereof formed in an irregular shape resting upon a projecting ring about the neck of the bottle, suitable sealing material filled in between the sides of the cap and the neck of the bottle, a lid supported on the side of the cap by legs made of an y breakable material, a seat over the mouth of such bottle, whereby the sealing material is prevented from contacting; with such lid, so that the bottle can be emptied of its contents only after breaking off the lid of the cap, substantially as shown and described.

6. A bottle having an annularfiange around the neck thereof, a cap adapted to fit over the neck and mouth of such bottle and rest upon such flange, legs supporting the lid of such cap on the body thereof, a cork in such bottle, sealin g material interposed between such cap and the cork and neck of the bottle, and seats made of suitable material separating such sealing material from the lid and also from the cork of the bottle, the legs supporting the lid of the cap adapted to be readily broken, whereby the lid and cork may be withdrawn, substantially as shown and described.
