UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS MORANDI, 'OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SUMMER-STOVES.
Spccilication forming part of Letters Patent No. 49,136, dated August 1, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS MORANDI, of No. 44 Union street, Boston, in the county of Sui'olk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Summer-Stoves 5 and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact dcscription thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same,
` reference bein g had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents an elevation of a vertical section of a stove made according to my invention, the line of section being seen at m, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a plan thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
The object of this invention is to provide" a portable, convenient, and economical summerstove for domestic and other uses.
It consists in a ire chamber or furnace which can be connected either with another stove, so as to discharge the products of combustion into its lilies, or else with a chimney or other iue, the fire chamber being provided with a boiler-hole, and the discharge-pipe being made to support a hot-air or combustion chamber, whose top forms a heatin g-surface on which vessels may be set as upon any other heating-surface.
A designates the body of a furnace or stove, whose form in this example is circular; but it may be of any desired shape as Well as of various sizes. It may also be ornamented in any desired style.
B is the grate, and D the draftdamper. The part C beneath the grate forms an ashchamber.
The inside of the walls of the stove, which Ipropose to make of sheet-iron for a light and portable stove, may be lined with fire-brick, so that wood, charcoal, anthracite coal, coke, or other fuel may be burned therein without destroying the walls. Its top may be of cast iron, and it is fitted with a boiler-hole, covered with one or more rings, Rand a cover, E.
G is the smoke-pipe. It extends horizontally a little distance from the stove, where it is joined by a descending pipe, J, which fits within a collar, L, of a perforated plate, K,
whose form is circular, and whose size is to be such as to enable it to cover a boiler-hole of any stove or range.
When my stove is used in connection with a cooking stove or range it is set upon its top, and the plate K is placed over one of the vacant boiler-holes ot' the stove or range. this position the products of combustion will be guided into the lues of the latter, and so into the chimney. This arrangement enables one to use my stove without disturbing the usual kitchen stove or range.` If, however, it is desired to direct the products ot' combustion into a chimney or other flue, the plate K may be removed from the pipe J and the latter pipe turned upward, as seen iu red outline; or it may be turned so as to point in a hori`v zontal direction.
II is a heating platform or chamberxed to the upper side of the horizontal pipe G, with which it communicates through a hole, I, which admits the hot air and gases and smoke from the stove, and in which the unconsumed gases will be received and burned. The surface of this chamber is of sufficient area to pernut its use for heating and 'cooking purposes, as for drawing tea, boiling coii'ee, and the like. It will be observed thatone can boil or broil at the opening of the stove A, and at the same time use the heating-surface of the chamber H for keeping any article already cooked hot or for making tea. Instead of making a chamber, H, on the upper side of the pipe G, a solid metallic piece or an openwork metallic piece may be fixed thereon to serve a like purpose. The chamber H in this example isbrought beneath the pipe Gr, when the pipe J is turned up; but the chamber H or any other platform that may take its place may be connected to a section ot'` the pipe G which shall remain unchanged, while an elbow which connects it with the pipe J may he turned with the latter. The platform would then be uppermost in any position ot the pipe J.
The chamber may be perforated withvtwo or more holes, so as to induce a circulation of hot air and gas through it.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In portable summer stovesor furnaces, ar.
InI
ranginga perforatedcoVe1,K,upon thesxnoke- 8. The combination of u summer stove or pipe, so as to enable oneto dischargethe smoke furnace with a platform or heating-surface, H, into and use the stove with a kitchen stove or on the pipe, substantially as described.
range without requiring any change in the lat- `1 ter, substantially as described. FRANQIS MORANDI' 2. Fixing a. platformen heating-surface, H, Witnesses: upon the horizontal part of the smoke-pipe, W. M. PARKER,- substantiallyas and forthe purpose described. A. B. ELY.
