Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
B. r. ELLs, or DAYTON, OHIO.
MACHINE FOR MAKING PAPER BAGS.V
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 49,736, dated September 5, 1865.
To all whom fit may concern.-
Bc it known that I, B. F. ELLS, of Dayton, in the county ofhlontgoinery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Making Paper Bags; and I do hereby7 declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying draW- ing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, A represents a block of Wood, made of anysuitable size, and which forms the base ofthe machine. To thefouredges of this block are hinged four folders, c d ef. Folder c is hinged at xx, that end of the block A which is opposite to the manipulator, and is the core or pattern around which the sack or bag is formed. This folder is made the same width as the blocl;,aiid about thesame length. The folders d and c, which are hinged to the side edges ofthe block, are not quite half as Wide as the block, and are shorter than its length by about half an inch at the end next to folder f.
j' is a small folder, about half an inch Wide and as long as the block is wide, said folder being secured by hinges to the block at the end at which the manipulator stands.
In using this machine the folders are rst all turned up from the block. The paper, after having been cut the proper size, is then laid upon the block and the folder c turned down, holding the paper securely to the block. The folder d, which is to the left hand of the operator, is then turned down, carrying with and under, it that portion ot' the paper which rests upon the paper projecting beyond the folder when turned down about half an inch. Paste is then put upon this projecting portion of the paper and the folder e is turned down, carrying the other side ofthe paper down upon the paste. Paste is now applied to the flap resting upon folder f, and said folder is turned down, and thus the bag or sack is completed.
It will thus be seen that with this machine sacks of paper maybe made with great facility.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The employmentof the blockAand the folders c d cf, constructed, arranged, and used as and for the purposes specified.
