Description

(No Model.) A. A. FREEMAN.
LUBRIGATOR.
No. 497,273.. Patented May 9, 1893.
lNVENTO alum- 5 A TTOHNE Y.
,, UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT A. FREEMAN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA,.ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM DURELL SHUSTER, OF SAME PLACE.
L U B R l CAT 0 R SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 497,273, dated May 9, 1893..
Application filed July 11,1892- Serial No. 439,566 (No model.)
T0 whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT A. FREEMAN,
a citizen of the United States, residingin the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lubricators, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a lubricator having a valve which is adapted to leave its seat automatically, and thus permit the discharge of the oil or lubricant, and which when the machine or movable part to which the lubricator is attached is at rest, prevents the discharge of said oil orlubricant, as will be hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 represents a vertical section of a lubricator embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a top view of the interior thereof. Fig. 3 represents a top view of the valve thereof. Fig. 4 represents a vertical section of a portion, showing the operation of the valve.
Similar letters of referenceindicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings: A designates a cup or chamber which is provided with a neck B for attaching purposes. WVithin the cup is suspended the reservoir 0, whose lower end opens into the cup A, and provides the seat D for the ball or other shaped valve E, which latter is freely held on said seat by means of the spiral or coiled spring F, which is connected with said valve and with a traveler G, the latter being fitted on the screw H, which being rotated causes said traveler to be raised and lowered, said screw being swiveled or mounted on the cross bar J, which is secured to the reservoir G.
The operation is as followsz-The screw H it turned so that the traveler G causes the spring F to hold the valve E sufficiently firm upon its seat, and thus prevent the escape or discharge of the oil from the vessel or reservoir 0. As the movable part of a locomotive engine or machine to which the lubricator is attached operates, the throw of the same vibrates the spring F and consequently the valve E, whereby the oil escapes at the bottom of the reservoir and enters the cup A, by which it is directed to the place of service. hen a locomotive engine strikes the joint at rest, thus preventing escape and loss of oil.
As a convenient means of connecting the spring F with the valve E, I employ a plug K, which has one end of said spring secured thereto, said plug being screwed to the valve, and also admitting of the adjustment of the tension of said spring.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A lubricatorhaviug an attachable oilcu p, a reservoir held in said cup, and having a discharge opening in its lower wall, a valve having its seat on the Walls of said opening, and a flexible support for said valve normally closing the same, said parts'being combined substantially as described.
2. A lubricator having an oil cup, an oil reservoir in said cup with a discharge opening therein, a valve controlling said opening, and an adjustable spring secured to said valve and normally closing the same, said parts being combined substantially as described.
3. A lubricator consisting of an attachable oil cup, an oil reservoir supported in said cup and having a discharge opening therein, a valve controlling said opening, a cross bar on said reservoir with a screwswiveled therein, a follower on said screw, and a spring connected with said follower and valve, said parts being combined substantially as described.
4. A lubricator having a reservoir a valve at the base of the latter, a flexible support for said valve, a traveler secured to said support, and a screw mounted on the lubricator, and engaging said traveler, said parts being combined substantially as described.
