HENRY SCl-IAMMEL, OF SAN PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
FASTENING FOR COVERS OF JARS OR BOTTLES.
, SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 497,077, dated May 9, 1893.
Application filed October 1'7, 1892.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY SGHAMMEL, a citizen of the United States, residingat San Francisco, in thecounty of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Fastening for Covers of. Jars or Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to glass or pottery packing and storing vessels such as jars and the like, and more especially to the swing fasteners for the covers thereof; and the object of the same is to so construct such fastener that when locked in place it cannot be swung laterally, and that when unlocked or disconnected at one end,it will automatically fly back out of the way to permit the removal of the jar cover.
To this end the invention consists in a ring clamped around the neck of the jar and having oppositely formed loops, a bail having an eye engaging one of said loops, and a hook standing transverse to the length of the bail and detachably engaging the other loop, a plate beneath the center of the bail, and an expansive spring between said plate and a de- The following description explains more fully the construction and operation of my improved fastening as applied to a glass jar or bottle.
The accompanying drawings which form part of this specification are referred to by letters.
It should be understood that the invention is equally applicable to bottles, cans and all kinds of vessels or receptacles having covers or lids to be fastened.
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the fastening applied to a jar. Fig. 2 is a cross section through the middle of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective viewof the fastening.
To the neck of the bottle or jar under the collar A, I attach a stiff ring B made of a single piece of wire in which are formed diametrically opposite loops C, C standing in a single plane which is at right angles to the plane of the ring B with the ends of the wire twisted together as at 7) whereby the ring is tightly clamped to the neck. A bail B ex- Serial No. 449,137. (No model.)
tends over the cap of the jar also composed of a stiff piece of wire and bent at right angles to form arms D, D one arm of which has an eye at loosely engaging or connected with the loop C of the ring in a permanent manner and the end of the other arm being bent laterally to the length of the bail to form a hook or look H which engages detachably with the opposite loop C, whose upright position in a plane through the axis of the jar easily permits such engagement. A plate or lug F is soldered or otherwise fixed to the center of the bail, to which plate is in turn fixed a spiral or helical spring G the lower portion of which is coiled in the rabbet or depression H formed in the top of the jar cover so that when the hook is unlocked from its fastening the bail is automatically thrown backward upon its hinge or loop by the expansive force of the spring and the latter and its plate will be carried with it. The plate F will serve also as a bearing for the upper end of the spring in forcing down the locking lever.
In practice the usual rubber gasket is placed around the mouth of the cover in position and the bail or looking lever is brought into position with the lower end of the coil of the spring in the rabbet or cup-shaped depression and the bail pressed downward until the hook can be passed into the loop of the ring and the jar is then sealed which is easily done when said hook stands at right angles to the length of the bail. The cover is firmly held down in air-tight manner. It will thus be seen that a very effective jar fastener is had and 8 5 one that can be produced at a verysmall cost.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein described fastening for covers 0 of jars and similar vessels comprising a ring B tightly clamped around the neck of the jar and having oppositely formed loops standing in a single plane at right angles to that of the ring, and a bail having an eye at one end pivotally connected with one loop of the ring, its body adapted to set so close across the top of the cover that when locked there it it cannot be turned on its pivot and its other securedto the upper end of the spring and end having a hook projecting from such end to the center of the bail, as described.
