UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM. PITT MILLAR, OF MORRISBURG, CANADA.
D l S K H A R R O W SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent N0. 495,051, dated April 11, 1893. Application filed May 6, 1892. Serial No. 431,992. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM PITT MILLAR, a citizen of Canada, residing at Morrisburg, in the county of Dundas, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Disk Harrows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
The object of my invention is to provide means whereby the ends of the arms carrying the revolving disks may be kept down when going over uneven ground. This has been done heretofore by means of Weights which are objectionable, adding to the draft unnecessarily when going over even ground. I accomplish this object by means of a rigid bar secured to the socket of the seat and carrying at its outer ends and pivoted thereto, adjustable levers. These levers carry eccentrics on their lower ends adapted to'either press on the arm carrying the disks, or permit the arm use as the nature of the ground demands.
In the drawing is shown a rear elevation of my invention.
AA are the arms of a harrow, carrying the revolving disks.
B is the casting in which the spring seat is secured. The harrow is also provided with tongue, lever, and other devices as usual in this class. To the casting B is secured the horizontal bar 0, and to the two outer ends of this bar are pivoted at d the levers D carrying the frames E the lower segmental edges e of which are eccentric to the pivot d. The levers D are provided with spring catches F suitably operated. These catches are engaged by the toothed segments on the ends of the bar 0. These levers can both be operated by the driver in his seat. As shown in the drawing, the arm on the right hand is depressed by the lever, while the other arm is allowed to rise with the ground; they are thus independent of one another, and may bed riven along a ridge or in a hollow and still do good work.
In harrows Where the disks are reversed the levers and eccentrics may be applied to the inner ends of the disk carrying arms.
I claim as my invention- The combination in a disk harrow, with the arms carrying the disks, of a horizontal rigid 'bar secured to the seat casting, carrying ad justable levers pivoted at its outer ends, the said levers carryinga frame having a segmental lower edge eccentric to the pivot of the lever, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
Signed at Morrisburg this 1st day of April, 1892.
WILLIAM PITT MILLAR.
In presence ot J. F. MILLAR, Gno. E. PURKIS.
