UNITED STAT S PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE BENDER, OF KEOKUK, IOIVA.
FOLDING COOP OR CRATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,914, dated August 16, 1892.
Application filed October 20, 1891. Serial No. 409,251. (No model.)
1'0 62 whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE BENDER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Keokuk, in the county of Lee and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Coops or Grates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in folding coops or crates; and it consists in the novel construction of the parts by which time is saved in setting up and folding the same and space is economized when the coop is folded for shipment or storage.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved coop or crate, showing it opened outwardly that its construction may be the more readily understood. Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the appearance of my improved coop when it is set up. Fig. 3 is an end view showing the ends folded upon the base and the top and sides as they would appear just before being closed down. Fig. 4 is a detail of a portion of the bottom,
showing the manner of fastening the coop when it is set up.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
In Fig. 1, c d e f indicate wire frames united by the hinges i i, the frame 0 forming the back and f the front of the coop, and d and e the top, Q gindicating the ends, the several parts being joined to the base by suitable hinges or staples h h. The ends have rings or loops j j, which when the coop is set up extend through the openings 70 k in the top. Into these rings or loops may be inserted rods or looks or other suitable fastenings. When the coop is closed, the hook m, passes through the opening 0 in the base a, and the spring-latch p closes upon it, thus securing the front when the coop is in use. The spring-catch is shown in detail, Fig. 4.
The manner of folding the coop is best illustrated in the end view, Fig. 3, where the ends g are shown closed down on the base a and the back 0, and one half of the top is shown as being folded forward from right to left,'while the other half of the top 6 and the front f are shown as being folded backward from left to right. The back, two-part cover, and front are all united by suitable hinges or fastenings, the several parts being connected to the raised portion 19 of the base a, which is of sufficient thickness to allow the several parts 0 d e f to fold over the ends g g when they have been turned in upon the base. By examination of Fig. 3 it will be observed that the part b is raised sufficiently above the base to accommodate the folding sides and cover to the previously-folded ends, the parts being shown slightly raised from the base, as they would appear in the act of folding, to better illustrate the operation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a folding coop or crate, the base a, provided with a raised portion 1) of the same vertical height as the thickness of the folded ends g, in combination with the sides, ends, and cover, the ends having rings or loops j, and the covenopenings is, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
2. In a folding coop or crate, the top frames provided with openings k k and the front frame h avin g the hook m, in combination with the end frames provided with loops 9' j and the base having the opening 0 to register with said hook, and a latch for securing the same, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I aftix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE BENDER.
VVitn esses JAMES BUOHANEN, ISAAC R. WAGGONNER.
