H. G. ELSE. FOLDING HAMMOGK FRAME.
No. 488,272. Patented Deo. 20, 1892.
HARRY G. ELSE., OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
FOLDING HAIVINIOCK-FRAVIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,272, dated December 20, 1892.
pplicatlon filed August 10, 1891. Serial No. 402,314. (No model.)
.To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY G. ELSE, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Hammock- Frames; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
Myinvention consists in theimprovements in folding hammock frames hereinafter set forth and explained and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which;
Figure lis a View of my improved folding hammock frame in elevation. Fig. 2 is a view of same in elevation folded together. Figs. 3, e, and 5 are detail views of portions of same. Fig. 6 is a top or plan View of my improved tripod support.
The object of my invention is to construct a light foldinghammock frame, which can be fllded together, so as to be conveniently porta e.
In the construction of my improved folding hammock frame shown in the drawings, A is a horizontal bar provided with a joint a, at or near the center thereof, preferably provided with a hinge B by means whereof it can be folded together, and with a stay bolt h for holding it in position when straightened out. To each end of the horizontal bar A, I secure a tripod support C, preferably made of a single casting, having upwardly and inwardly projecting anges c between which the ends D and D of the bar A pass, and are pivoted thereto by means of bolts d which pass through the inner ends of the iianges c and also through the bar A, so that the hinge thus formed operates vertically and allows the tripod supports C to be folded under the ends of the bar A. The tripod supports C are each provided with three sets of radially projecting flanges E, E, E, equidistant from each other, between which the upper ends of the legs F F F are pivoted by means of bolts e passing through the flanges E and upper ends of the legs F so that the legs F F F can be readily foldedtogether when desired.
Vertically through the horizontal bar A near the ends thereof and back of the pivot bolts d I secure hooks G G from which a hammock H can be suspended, as illustrated in Fig. l, the pull of the hammock H, on the hooks G, operating to make the hinged joints between the ends of the bar A, and the tripod supports C very rigid when weight is applied thereto. A small chain h is also preferably secured to the central part of the barA adapted to pass around the ends of the tripod legs E when folded up under the bar A as illustrated in Fig. 2.
It will be observed that when desired the frame can be folded up with the bar A at full length as illustrated by full lines, or with the bar A folded together as illustrated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2.
Having thus fully described my invention so as to enable others to construct and use the same, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The combination in a folding hammock support, of two tripod supports, having radially Vand downwardly projecting flanges as E E,
between which the upper ends of tripod legs as F are pivoted, with upwardly and inwardly projecting flanges as c c, on the tops. of said tripod supports, a horizontal bar as A,4 pivoted between the flanges c c by means of bolts as d passing through the inner ends of said iianges, and hammock hooks as G passing through said bar A between the pivot bolts dand the tops of the tripod supports, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof Iaftix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HARRY G. ELSE. Witnesses:
I-I. J. CURTZE, H. M. STURGEON.
