No. 484,998. Patented Oct. 25, 1892.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALPHONSO S. OOMSTOCK, OF EVANSTON, ILLINOIS.
TENT-PIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 484,998, dated October 25, 1892.
Application filed July 25, 1892. Serial No. 441,211. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beitknown that I, ALPHONSO S. OoMsTooK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evanston, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in TentPegs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and in Which-- Figures 1, 2, and 3 are elevations from different positions of a tent-peg embodying the invention. Figs. 4 and 5 are transverse sections thereof on the lines 4 land 5 5, respectively.
The object of the present invention is to provide a tent-peg that shall be as light as possible, while possessing the requisite strength; and to this end the invention consists in certain features of novelty that are particularly pointed out in the claims hereinafter.
The body portion A of the peg is of angular cross-section, and may have any desired number of flanges a. The drawings show three joined at right angles, (giving a T- shaped cross-section,) and this is preferred for the reason that it gives a broad back I) for resisting the lateral displacement of the pin by the strain that comes upon it whilein use. The surface of this back is provided with a number of depressions b, which serve the double purpose of lightening the peg and in creasing the friction when it is driven into the ground. The lower ends of all of the flanges are tapered off to a common center, so as to give the lower end of the peg a point.
From the head C of the pin projects a spur D, which preferably inclines downward slightly, and below this spur the throat c is rounded, so as to avoid sharp corners, and
form such a hearing as will not out or chafe the guy-rope.
At a, the flanges taper and merge with the surface of the throat, and the throat itself has a tapering extension 0, which merges with the surfaces of the flanges, resulting in the avoidance of sharp angles at the junction of the throat and body of the pin and in the giving of adequate strength at this point.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A tent-peg having a body A, having radiating flanges, a head 0, a spur D, projecting laterally therefrom, and a rounded throat 0, located below said spur, substantially as set forth.
2. A tent-peg having a body A of angular cross-section, a head 0, a spur D, projecting laterally therefrom, and a rounded throat 0, located below said spur and having the tapering extension 0, merging with the surface of the body of the peg, substantially as set forth.
3. A tent-peg having the body portion A of angular shape in cross-section, the head 0, having the spur D, projecting laterally therefrom, the rounded throat 0, located below said spur, and the tapering extension 0, merging with the surface of the body of the peg, the flanges of said body being tapered at a, merging with the surface of the throat,-substantially as set forth.
4. A tent-peg having a body A of T shape in cross-section, forming a broad back I), a head 0, a spur D, projecting laterally from said head, and arounded throat c, located below said spur, substantially as set forth.
