UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN C. BLAIR, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
DENTAL INSTRUMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 484,287, dated October 11, 1892.
Application filed March 2, 1892. Serial No. 423,535. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that 1, JOHN G. BLAIR, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and Improved Instrument for Use in Dental Surgery, of which the following is a specification.
My dental instrument or appliance is designed for use in treating dead or pulpless teeth preparatory to filling. In other words, it is an instrument adapted for injecting a .certain vapor or gas into the pulp-cavity and root-canals of teeth that have died from exposure or disease for the purpose of disinfecting the same and destroying any poisonous matter that may be contained therein.
The instrument is shown in the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 being mainly a longitudinal section, and Figs. 2 and 3 cross-sections on lines 2 2 and 3 3, respectively, of Fig. 1.
The body of the instrument is composed of a small tube 0,, provided at one point with a wooden casing b, which forms a handle, and passing through a short cylindrical receiver or gas-generator 0, designed to hold the medicinal substance while being vaporized. A hollow needle 01 is screwed on one end of the tube a, and a rubbertube e is connected with a compressible bulb attached to the other end of the same. In practice the proportional dimensions of parts may be as follows: The tube a six inches in length, the cylinder 0 one inch long and five-eighths of an inch in diameter, and the rubber tube 6 about ten inches long. The tube a has two openings Within the cylinder c, and a plug f is inserted between them, so that the air forced in by the bulb is caused to pass out of one opening into the chamber and then re-enter the bulb, as shown by arrows.
The medicinal substance I prefer to employ whereby air is forced into the gas-chamber I and expels or carries along with it a portion of the iodoform gas or vapor into the tooth. The result is that the surface. with which the gas comes in contact is disinfected and all forms of minute animal life are destroyed. The vapor will condense in the smaller rootcanals and till them, so that they will not require to be plugged with gold, &c., after treatment. The larger roots should, however, be plugged, as well as the main chamber or cavity of the tooth.
The instrument is very convenient and effective in use, but siinplein construction, and may be furnished at small cost.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is
In an instrument of the class hereinbefore indicated, the combination, with the receiver 0, of the air-cond noting tube having two openings within said receiver, and a plug which is located between the openings, as and for 'the purpose specified.
JOHN C. BLAIR.
