E. A.V GROSS. WATER FILTER.
(No Model.)
NQ. 470,192. Patented Mar. 8, '1892.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELAM A. GROSS, OF CAMDEN, NEV JERSEY.
WATER- FILTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 470,192, dated March 8, 1892.
Application mea July 9, 1891.
To all whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, ELAM A. GROSS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Camden, in the county of Camden and State o f New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Water-Filter, of which the following is a specilication.
The invention relates to improvements in water-filters.
The object of the presentinvention is to provide a simple, strong, and durable water-filter adapted to contain filtering material-such as charcoal and the like-and to be attached to a hydrant, faucet, or the like and capable of being readily cleaned.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed ont in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of a filter constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a' transverse sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the double conical casing, the sections being separated.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, l designates a tube constructed, preferably, of rubber and adapted to be attached to the nozzle of a hydrant or to a water cock or faucet and having centrally arranged within it a casing 2, adapted to contain charcoal or other suitable filtering material. The casing 2 consists of two conical sections 3, provided at their bases with rings or annular iianges 4, adapted to fit on each other and secure the sections together, and the sections are foraminous to permit the passage of water through the casing. The diameter of the casing is the same as that of the bore or opening of the tube 1, and the casing is fitted centrally within the tube and may be suitably secured thereto, and water passing through the tube is purified by charcoal or other material contained within the casing.
The ends of the tube l may be roughened or threaded or provided with couplings, so that they may be readily secured to the nozzle of a hydrant, and to enable the tube l to Serial No. 398,949. (No model.)
be readily fitted on a small cock or faucet a supplemental tube 5 is provided and is fitted in one end of the tube l and is adapted to receive within it a cock or faucet.
The filter may be readily cleaned by reversing it and turn-ing the tube l end for end, and the casing may, if desired, be removed for cleaning, and the same is also removable for supplying charcoal or other similar material.
It will be seen that the filter ,is simple, strong, and durable, and adapted to be readily attached to the nozzle of a hydrant or to a cock or faucet, and that it may be readily cleaned by simply reversing it and turning the tube end for end. The conical shape provides a space for water to pass through at the sides of the case, thereby cleansing the water more thoroughly.
IVhat I claim isl. A `filter comprising a straight tube constructed of a single piece of material and adapted to have either end attached to the nozzle of a hydrant or to acock or faucet, and a double conical casing arranged within the tube and composed of two removable and separable foraminous conical sections having their bases secured together, substantially as described.
2. A filter comprising a main straight tube constructed of a single piece of material and drant or the like and being'reversible, whereby either end may be attached to the nozzle, a double conical casing arranged within the tube and adapted to contain a filtering material and composed of two foraminous conical sections separable from each other andremovable from the tube and provided at their bases with annular iianges fitting on each other, and a supplemental tube adapted to lit in the main tube to reduce the opening of the same, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
