G. S. GOLLUM.
SOISSORS SHARPENER.
No. 479,737. Patented- July 26, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE S. COLLUM, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGN OR TO CHARLES H. RUSSELL AND WILLIAM H. COLLUM, OF SAME PLACE.
SCISSORS-SHARPEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 479,737, dated July 26, 1892.
Application filed February 5, 1892. Serial No. 420,432. (No model.)
To all whom it WI/LZZ/ concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE S. COLLUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scissors-Sharpeners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
The invention relates to the class of articles upon which both blades of a pair of scissors are sharpened at the same time,.the object of the invention being to provide asmall, simple, cheap, durable, and efficient article of this class, which is handy and convenient, and I5 canbe used by any one for sharpening quickly both blades of a pair of scissors or shears.
To this end the invention resides in an article consisting of a cylindrical body of hard steel having at its ends flanges forming fingerpieces for holding the article, which flanges project at such an angle that when the outside faces of the scissors-blades lie against them in use the cutting-edges will be sharpened upon the proper bevel, as more particu- 2 5 larly hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is aside view of the article, illustrat ing the manner of its use. Fig. 2 is an edge view. Fig. 3 is a section, and Fig. 4 is a section, of a modified form of construction of the same.
In the views, 1 indicates the body, which is formed cylindrical, usually of a piece of very 5 hard round steel rod. The surface ofthis body is knurled or provided with fine roughening cuts or scratches to make an abradingsurface for sharpening. At the ends of this body are smooth flanges 2, that may eitherbe formed integral, as shown in Fig. 4, with the body by casting, stamping, or swaging, or which may be shaped from sheet .metal and secured upon studs which project from the ends of the body by riveting or by screws 3, 5 as shown in Fig. 3. These flanges,which,pro-
jecting outwardly from the body at the ends, forming pockets to protect the thumb and finger which hold the device While in use sharpening scissors, are inclined at such an angle that when the blades 4 of the scissors lie against them and are opened and closed the body of the sharpener abrades the edges of the blades on the proper bevel to make a good out.
In use the article is held between the thumb and finger of one hand, while the scissors in the other hand are opened and closed upon the body, as if attempting to cut the rod in two, with their outer faces lying against the inner faces of the opposite flanges. A few cuts of the scissors after this manner so abrades and grinds the edges that a fine even cutting-edge is formed upon both of the blades on the correct bevel to insure good wear.
The device is very simple and cheap, it occupies no amount of space, can be kept in any work-basket, is always ready for use, can be handled by any one at all times, and quickly gives a good edge to any pair of shears.
I claim as my invention- 1. As an article of manufacture,a scissorssharpener consisting of a wide cylindrical body portion or hub and at each end thereof an outwardly-flaring smooth guiding-flange, substantially as described.
2. As an article of manufacture, ascissorssharpener consisting of a wide roughened cylindrical body portion or hub and at each end thereof an outwardly-flared smooth guiding-flange, substantially as described.
3. As an article of manufacture, a scissors sharpener consisting of a wide cylindrical body portion or hub and at each end thereof an outwardly-flaring smooth guiding-flange having a pocket to protect the finger and thumb, substantially as described.
GEORGE S. COLLUM.
