UNITED uSTATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK MLLER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
POCKET-BooK, eac.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No'. 476,159, dated May 31, 1892.
i Application filed December 26. 1891. Serial No. 416,186. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK MLLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Pocket-Books, Card- Cases, thc., of which the following is a specication.
The 'object of my invention is to so construct the lockin'grdevice for the flap or overlying portion of a pocket-book, card-case, or the like, and to so combine said locking device with said overlying` portion or flap that no part of the device will be exposed upon the outer face of the flap or cover, so'that the latter is not disfigured by the exposure of the locking device, but can be ornamented in any way which the taste of the manufacturer may suggest or can be left entirely plain if ornamentation is not desired. Y
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective view of a pocketbook provided with a locking device for the flap in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section of part of the flap with that element of the locking device which is carried thereby; and Fig. 4 is a perspective View on a still larger scale, showing the parts of the lock and lock-casing detached from each other.
In Figs. 1, 2, and 3, A represents the flap of a pocket-book, and B the body of the book, these parts being locked together when the iap is closed. The locking device consists in the present instance of a notched stem a, projecting upward from a plate b, secured to the outer pocket d of the body of the book, this notched stern being engaged by a boltj', which slides and is guided in a casing carried by the flap and comprising a box g and acover-plate h, the bolt being acted upon by a spring e', which tends to project it and cause `it to engage with the notched stern a, but said bolt having a head f', projecting beyond the ap, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, so that the bolt can be pushed inward to release it from the notched stem and permit of the opening of the Hap, the latter operation being effected by a movement which is practically a continuation of the movement necessary to release the bolt,
so that the unlocking and raising of the ap are readily accomplished. Usually in this class of goods the bolt and its casing are mounted upon the outside of the flap, which is perforated for the passage of the notched stem, and in the ner class of goods the presence of the bolt-casing on the outside of the iiap is a disgurement and in many cases interferes with the application of ornamental designs to the ilap, or is equally objectionable in cases where a plain flap is desired. In order to overcome this objection, therefore, I provide the flap with an inner layer or lining m and I secure the lock-casing to this inner layer or lining, so that the outer surface of the iiap is not mutilated nor is it marred by the presence of the lock-casing thereon..
As shown in the drawings, the cover-plate h of the lock-casing rests against the inner face of the inner layer or lining-piecemof the flap and has parallel slots n near its opposite edges, through which slots pass wings p, projecting upward from the opposite sides of the bolt-casing g, these wings passing through the slots in the cover-plate h, thence through like slots in the inner layer or lining lmof the flap, and being then turned down upon said lining, so as to serve not only to confine the coverplate h to the casing g, but also to secure the entire lock-casing to the flap, the bent portions of the wings being embedded between the inner and outer layers of the flap, so that no portion ofthe lockfcasing is exposed upon the surface.
The plate l), which carries the notched stem a, has iingers b', which are passed through the material of the outer pocket d of the body of the book and are bent down inside of the same, in order to secure the plate Z9 in place, and it will be evident that, so far as the main object of my invention is concerned, the plate b might be secured to the lining of the liap Aand the lock-casing to the pocket d, although the construction shown is preferred, and it Will also be manifest that my invention is applicable to card-cases or the like, in which the flap or like part of the case is either of the character shown in the drawings or carries one or more pockets, that part of the locking device which is carried by the flap being, however, in all IOO cases secured to the innermost portion or layer of the flap, so as to prevent any exposure of vthe lock-casing on the surface.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A pocket-book, card-case, or the like having a flap or overlying portion secured to theother portion or body bya locking device consisting of a notched stem and a sliding bolt, one element of said locking device being secured to the inner layer or lining of the flap 4 by fastening devices, which are covered by the outer layer of said Hap, whereby no portion of the locking device is exposed on the outer face of the Hap, the locking-bolt proj ecting beyond the edge of said iiap, substantially as specified.
2. A pocket-book,card-case, or thelike having a flap or overlying portion secured to the zo other portion or body by a locking device consisting of a notched stem and a sliding boit, said flap carrying the Ysliding bolt and a casing and cover-plate therefor, said casnghaving wings passing through slots in the coverplate and through the inner layer or lining of the flap, and said wings being turned down between the inner and outer layers of said Hap so as to be covered by the outer layer, whereby the lock-case is secured together and to the iap without the exposure of any part of said case uponthe outer face of the ap, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
vERE DERICK MLLER.
Vitnesses:
EUGENE ELTERICH, HARRY SMITH.
