Description
(No Model.) G. H. GATE.
SPOOL HOLDER. No. 462,622. Patented Nov. 3,1891.
" UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE II. GATE, OF CHEBOYGAN, MICHIGAN.
SPOOL-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 462,622, dated November 3, 1891.
Application filed October 18, 1890. Serial No. 368,549. (No model.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE II. GATE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oheboygan, in. the county of Gheboygan and State of illichigamhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spool-Holders, 'lhread-Grips, and Cutters, of which the following is aspecification.
This invention relates to a device for holding a spool and the end of the thread ready for drawing off any length of thread, suitable means being also provided for cutting off the thread and securely gripping the remaining end and holding it in convenient position to be again grasped at any time. The device will also check the running of the spool or permit it to run freely, according as the spool is shifted by a slight movement of the fingers.
My improvement consists in novel features of construction, hereinafter described and claimed.
In order that my invention may be fully understood I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure I is a side elevation of my improved spool-holder, thread-grip, and cutter, a spool of cotton being in place thereon. Fig. II is a bottom view of the same, showing the means for retaining the spool and cutting the thread, the spool being omitted.
1 represents the spindle, flat-sided and ta poring outwardly and non circular in crosssection, and this spindle is elongated and has a recess 2, forming a head 3.
-l is a spring-plate formed with a catch 5 at one end, seating in the recess, and with a cutter 5 at the other end. The cutterand plate are made of a single blade of steel properly formed at the respective ends and secured to the spindle by means of a suitable fastening, such as pins 6. The spindle is further provided with a bracket 7, provided with an arm 7, carrying a thread loop or guide 8 The thread-loop is formed by a plate 9, placed against a recess in the arm in such a way as to form the eye 10, having the narrow inlet 11, and the tapered grip-slot 12. The arm is preferably made with a square shoulder 13 to prevent the thread becoming released.
I11 use the device maybe pla ed between the thumb and two fingers. Bymoviug the spool slightly toward the small end the spool will be free to rotate, the thread being drawn over the nearest finger through the inlet into the thread loop or guide. Any length of thread is pulled off, the spool pushed into fixed position, and the thread drawn across the knife, by which it is severed, the portion of the thread to be left passing into the tapered grip-slot and binding therein to assist the cutting operation and to hold the remaining end ready to be grasped at another time. The spool being locked from turning on the inner end of the spindle and the free end of the thread being held in the grip-slot, the thread on the spool is prevented from unraveling.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A spool-holder constructed with an elongated outwardly-tapering spindle having a bracket provided with an arm formed with a grip-slot, and means for retaining a spool on the spindle when the spool is shifted outwardly, the spindle providing a spool-bearing on which a spool is shifted from an outer loose position to an inner fixed position,or vice versa, substantially as described.
2. A spool-holder constructed with an outwardly-tapering spindle 1, polygonal in crosssection, having a recess 2, and the springplate 4, having a catch 5, seating in the recess of the spindle, substantially as described.
3. A spool-holder constructed with a spindle 1, having a recess 2, and a spring-plate 4c, secured to the side of the spindle, having a spring-catch 5 at one end located over the recess and a cutter 5 at the other end projecting beyond the spindle, substantially as described.
4. A spoolholder constructed with a spindle 1, with means for retaining a spool on the spindle, and with a bracket 7, having an arm 7, formed with a tapering recess, and a plate 9, secured to the arm against the recess to provide a grip-slot 12, substantially as dethe arm against the recess, leaving an inlet 11 scribed. between its free end and the shoulder, sub
5. A spool-holder constructed with a spinstantially as described. dle 1, with means for retaining the spool on GEO. H. GATE. 5 the spindle, and with a bracket 7, having an YVitnesses:
arm 7, formed with a tapering recess, and FRANK SHEPHERD,
with a shoulder 13, and a plate 9, secured to SAML. H. TAYLOR.
