Description

(No Model.)
H. W. LIBBEY.
SEWER PIPE No. 465,936. Patented Decp29, 1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IIOSEA XV. LIBBEY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
SEWER-PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 465,936, dated December 29, 1891.
Application filed November 19, 1889. Serial No. 330,840- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOSEA W. LIBBEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Sufiolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewer-Pipes, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce a sewer-pipe in which access can readily be had to the inside of the pipe for removing obstructions, or 'for other purposes, without breaking the pipes; and the invention consists in a sewer-pipe having an oblong or oval opening and a cover that fits over the said opening, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan or top view of a sewer-pipe embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on line .2 a. Fig. 3 is a similar section with the cover removed, and Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the cover.
A represents a sewer-pipe with a socket A at one end. At or about the center of the length of the pipe I form an oblong or oval opening B, which, when the pipe is laid, is at the top of the pipe A. A longitudinal dovetailed projection a is formed on each side of the opening B, and the cover 0 is formed with beveled edges on each side to fit into the said dovetailed projections a, so that when the cover is in position on the pipe to cover the opening B it is held by'the said dovetailed projection 17., and is not dependent upon the weight of. the earth above it to keep it in position. It will be seen that should any obstruction occur in a sewer fitted with pipes constructed according to this invention when the earth has been removed from above the pipes the covers can readily be taken off, thereby rendering access to the interior of the sewer, so that any obstruction can be removed and the cover replaced. I prefer to construct the sewer withall the pipes embodying my invention, as then access can be had to the interior of the sewer at short intervals; but, if preferred, pipes thus constructed may be inserted only at desired intervals in connection with ordinary sewer-pipes.
hat I claim as my invention is A sewer-pipe having an opening in its side and two straight longitudinal ribs, one upon each side of the opening, and substantially parallel with each other, each of said ribs having its inner edge overhanging the base, which is beyond the edge of the opening, and a rectangular cover conforming upon its interior with the exterior surface of the pipe, and having its edges adapted to be slipped longitudinally under the overhanging portions of the ribs and close the opening in the pipe, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 20th day of September, A. D. 1889.
' HOSEA V. LIBBEY.
