KI-IURSEDJI MANEKJI TATA, OF NAVSARI, NEAR BOMBAY, INDIA.
POCKET-KNIFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.453,296, dated .Tune 2, 1891.
Application filed October 1, 1890. Serial No. 366,768. (No model.)
To all whom ,it may concern:
Be it known that I, KHURSEDJI MANEKJI TATA, of N avsari, near Bombay, India, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Knife-Blades, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in knife-blades, and especially to blades of pocket-knives, and has for its object to so construct the blade that when sharp there will be less likelihood of cutting the fingers when used by a careless or inexperienced person or by a child than when an ordinary knife is used.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification7 in which similar figures and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a side elevation of the knifeblade, illustrated as pivoted to a handle. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar section on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the blade detached, illustratinga slight modification in its construction; and Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a portion of ablade, illustrating a further modification in its construction.
The blade l0 is provided with a series of recesses 1l in one edge, separated by blunt partitions 12, which partitions are of a Width' corresponding to the Width of the blade. The longitudinal edges of the recesses 11 are beveled and sharpened to constitute cuttingedges, as illustrated at a.
Any number of recesses provided with cutting-edges may be formed in the knife-blade, two being illustrated in Fig. 1; but in Fig. 4 the blade is illustrated as provided with recesses formed at intervals throughout the enof the blades are rounded and more or less blunt instead of being pointed, asis customary.
In the form of blade illustrated in Fig. 1, between the outer end and the outer recess l1 therein, the inner edge of the blade is beveled and sharpened in the ordinary manner, and upon the beveled face of the blade at the outer end a file-surface 14 is produced, corresponding to the tile-surface 13 of the form of blade illustrated in Fig. 4. The recesses ll are made sufficiently wide to permit the cutting-edges a located between them to be used for trimming the nails and for sharpening pencils; but the recesses may be made shorter or longer than illustrated, if in practice it is found desirable.
It will be observed that as the cutting-edges are. located somewhat near the longitudinal center of the blade the partitions l2 between the cutting-su rfaces serve as guards, and that it is almost impossible to use the knife so carelessly as toinjure the user. The file combined with the blade renders the improved blade especially1 desirable for manicure purposes.
Itwill be understood that the recesses l1 may be given any desired shape-as, for instance, they may be curved or arched at their cutting-surfaces, as shown at ct in Fig. 5.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufacture, a knife-blade provided with a series of rectangular recesses in one edge separated by partitions having blunt outer edges, the inner walls of the said recesses being sharpened to form cutting-edges, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses7 this lst day of August,
KI-IURSEDJ I MANEKJ I TATA. Witnesses:
MANEGKJI BYRANY BHARORCHA, .IAMSETJIE PEsToNJEE MEHTA.
