Description
(No Model.)
H. J. .HESOOCK & P. A. SAWYER. FAUGET.
No. 451,895. Patented May 5", 1891 is closed.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY J. HESCOCK AND PRINCE A. SAIVYER, OF PHILLIPS, MAINE; SAID SAY VYER ASSIGNOR TO SAID HESOOCK.
FAUCET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 451,895, dated May 5, 1891.
Application filed March 11, 1890. Serial No. 343,569. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that We, HENRY J. HESOOCK and PRINCE A. SAWYER, both citizens of the United States, and both residing at Phillips, in the county of Franklin and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Faucets, which we term our Patent Safety-Faucet, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to an improvement in faucets, by which there is a spring, lever, and catch, all combined in one piece of brass or steel firmly attached to the outer end of the handle of the plug of the faucet and extending inward and downward and working up and down in a slot in the plug of the faucet, said spring or lever being under the handle. On either side of the plug of the faucet and on the upper surface of the barrel of the faucet is a groove or slot, into which the catch is forced by the spring when the faucet To turn the handle and open the faucet, so as to allow liquid to flow through it, a person must take hold of the handle with the hand and with the fingers press upward on the spring, which lifts the catch out of the groove or slot in the barrel of the faucet and allows the handle to be turned and the fancet opened; but when closed again the spring forces the catch into the slot on either side of the barrel and cannot be open ed, except as before described.
By reference to the accompanying drawings it will be seen that Figure 1 is a side view of the faucet complete. Fig. 2 is the body or barrel of the faucet. Fig. 3 is the plug, and Fig. 4 is the spring-arm.
- Similar letters refer to similar parts in the several views.
Letters a (1 represent the notches in the body in proximity to the plug, there being four such notches, one on either side and one toward either end.
b represents the groove in the plug, wherein the free end of the spring-arm works in conjunction with notches a ct.
0 represents a hole in the handle of plug, where the end of the spring-arm is attached.
d represents end of spring-arm fastened to handle of plug by being inserted in hole 0.
6 represents free end of the spring-arm, which operates in groove 1) in conjunction with notch a a.
WVhat we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a faucet, the combination of the body having notches arranged in proximity to the plug, with said plug provided with its handle and a spring-arm extending from the latter, the free end of which lies in a groove in the plug and is adapted to co-operate with any one of the notches in the body, whereby the plug may be locked in an opened or closed position, as described.
