COMBINED EXTENSION SHOW-TABLE, TOILET-STAND, AND BUREAU.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, MARTIN ROSENBAUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of iVashington, have invented a new and useful Combined Extension Show-Table, Toilet- Stand, and Bureau, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a new article of furniture for hotels and boarding-houses, where, for the lack of sufficient room, it is desirable to combine with a show-table several parts of a bed-room set.

The object of my invention is to provide commercial travelers or drummers with a large show-table for the display of their goods having combined therewith concealed toilet and dressing appliances, so as to impart a show-room appearance to the room during business hours, while at other times the room can be utilized as a toilet and dressing apartmerit.

Reference is made to another application of even date herewith, Serial No. 370,885, which shows and describes certain features of construction which are shown, described, and claimed in this specification.

My improvement consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter described and claimed.

In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which-- I Figure I is a front elevation of my combined extension show-table, toilet-stand, and bureau. Fig. II is a central vertical longitudinal section thereof. Fig. III is an under side view of the upper sliding extension or shelf. Fig. IV is an under side view of the lower sliding extension or shelf. Fig. V is a plan view of the structure, the table-top and extensions or shelves being omitted and the other parts being opened. Fig. VI is a front elevation showing the structure arranged as a show-table.

Supported on the partitions and extending lengthwise of .the casing are strips 12, 13, and 14:, providing a horizontal partition and forming the bottom of an upper compartment 15, extending the length of the casing and occupied by overlapping sliding and normallyconcealed extensions or shelves 16 and 17, adapted to be drawn out their full length past each other.

Secured in upright position over the back of the casing is a mirror 19.

The middle compartment 10 is provided with two superposed drawers 30 and suitable support for the upper drawer. The left-hand compartment 11 is provided for the reception of a jar 31. and vessel 32, and is closed by a door The upper extension or shelf is provided with a handle 10, and is constructed on its under side with a frame 34, providing a chamber or recess 35, and slides in and out on the lower extension or shelf 17. To the under side of this extension, in hangers or straps 38, is secured a support for the extension formed with a rod 39, by which it is hinged to the extension within the chamber or rece s, having a bent middle portion 40, with legs 41, and with a cross-tie 42; also, hinged to similar hangers or straps 43 within the chamber or recess is a brace consisting 'of a cross-bar 44, and a rod 45, extending from the cross-bar, having a notch 46 near its outer end for receiving the crosstie 42 when the extension is drawn out. \Vhen this extension is pushed into its compartment 15, the support folds toward its outer end into the chamber or recess 35, and the brace folds toward the same end into the chamber or recess, and its outer end rests on the lower extension,partly within the bent middle portion 40 of the support. The ends of the legs of the supportrest upon plates 47, secured to the end The upper extension is first drawn out to permitthe lower extension to be raised and pulled out. If the upper extension is returned while the lower extension is projected the brace will fold up, slide onto, and be supported by aspringplate 48, the free outer end of the latter being depressed by a wedge-shaped block 49, secured to the upper extension to guide it under the cross-tie 42. The springplate is secured to the middle strip by its inner end, and its free outer end is held down by the lower extension when the latter is in normal position; but when the lower extension is drawn out it rises, so as to assume the function of the latter as a support for the brace of the upper extension.

The lower extension is provided with a handle 17 and is constructed with a frame 50 on its underside, forminga chamber or recess 51, and with lugs 52 on its edges, which come in contact with the portions 53 of the end 4 to prevent the entire withdrawal of the extension. This extension on its withdrawal is is caused to slide up into the same plane as the upper extension by means of two wedgeshaped blocks 54,which lift it whenitis drawn out.

This support is constructed with a rod 56, by which it is hinged, having a bent middle portion 57, with legs 58 and with a cross-tie 59, and folds toward the outer end of the extension. Between the wedges are hangers or straps 60, to which is hinged a brace consisting of a cross-bar 61 and a rod 62, extending from the bar, having a notch 63 for receiving the cross-tie 59 of the support when thelatter is lowered into supporting position. When the support and brace are folded up the end of the latter rests in the bent portion of the rod of the former. This lower extension is pushed in first, and when within its compartstrip 13. The legs of the frame rest upon the side strips 12 and 14, respectively, and the blocks in the spaces between the strips. hen the supports are drawn out the legs engage with their braces automatically, and when the extensions are pushedin the braces and supports are disengaged and fold up antomatically and follow the extensions. It will be seen that the extensions can be adjusted to fit any moderate-sized room.

Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. The combination of the casing'havinga horizontal partition and table-top forming an upper compartment, and the superposed upper and lower extensions, the lower extension having means by which it is guidedinto the same plane as the upper extension, while it. is drawn out after the upper extension is removed, substantially as described,

The combination of the plain table-top 6, the front 1, the back 2, the ends 3 4, the vertical partitions 7 8, forming with the ends and back the lower compartments 9 1O 11, the horizontal partition forming an upper compartment-15, and the superposed upper and lower extensions, the lower extension having means by which it is guided into the same plane as the upper extension, while it is drawn out after the upper extension is removed, substantially as described. 7

3. The combination of the casing consisting of the front 1, the back 2, the end 3, having a narrow opening 21, and the end 4, having wide opening 22, the table-top 6, the

strips 12 14, the upper sliding extension 16, and the lower sliding extension 17, having wedge-shaped lifting-blocks 54, substantially as described.

4. The combination, with the casing having an end formed with an opening, of the table-top, the sliding extension having a frame 34, providing a chamber 35, the sup port folding outwardly and consisting of a rod 39 by which it is hinged to the extension, with the legs 41 and with the cross-tie 42 and the brace consisting of a cross-bar 44, hinged to the extension, and a rod 45, having a notch 46 near its outer end for receiving the crosstie, substantially as described.

5. The combination, with the casing having an end formed with an opening, of the table-top, the sliding extension 16, having a frame 34, providing a chamber 35, the support folding outwardly and consisting of a rod by which it is hinged to the extension, having a bent portion 40, with the legs 41 and with the cross-tie 42, and the brace consisting of a cross-bar 44, hinged to the ex tension, and a rod 45, having a notch46 near its outer end for receiving the cross-tie, the end of the brace-rod resting within the bent portion of the support-rod when the support and brace are folded within the chamber, I a bent portion 40, a hinged brace, and a substantially as described.
