C. MORRILL. SAW SET. No. 441,963.
Patented Deo. 2, 1890.
A TTU/MEV.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES MORRILL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SAW-SET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 441,963, dated December 2,1890.
Application tiled July 30, 1890. Serial No. 360,418. (No model.)
.T0 a/ZZ whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES MOREILL, a citizen of the 4United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Log-Saw Sets, of which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in saw-sets having a screw-adjustinghammer, a xed or adjustable anvil, and a saw-adjusting device, all of which will be fully described hereinafter.
The saw-sets heretofore made for setting the teeth of log-saws were provided with a horizontally-adjustable hammer, and a iixed anvil abutting against a guiding-wall, the latter forming a part of the main body of the device. I find that when setting the teeth of a saw with this device the points thereof would press or rub against the vertical guiding-wall,and thereby dull them, which would necessarily require refiling. I also find that the adjustable guide-plate is somewhat cumbersome and expensive. I propose to simplify the device and provide ample means whereby the teeth will be guided when being set Without having their points dulled or otherwise injured. These objections are obviated by my invention, which consists of a punch-handle holder, the latter terminating in a projection, which I will here term the main body of the device. Upon the'horizontal plane of the device is arranged an anvil, and near thereto are two vertically-iixed guides and a saw-adjusting screw located near to the forward end of the device, all of which work in combination with other lnechanical contrivances, thus forming a complete saw-set.
The invention will be more fully set forth and pointed out in the claims hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a plan view of the device. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line X X of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a detached plan view of the punchhandle holder. Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on the line Y Y of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a diagram of the working parts, showing the manner in which thesaw is operated upon.
Similar letters referto similar parts throughout the drawings, in whicha represents the punch-handle, and b its holder, the main body of the latter having a vertically -projecting lug provided with a screw-threaded sleeve c, having the nut n integral therewith and adapted to receive the screw-threaded extension d of the horizontally-arranged hammer e. The main body of the device is mounted with the fixed anvil f and vertical guides g, as also the saw-adjusting screw h, the operation of which will be ex plained hereinafter.
rlfodusopercmdi: The adjusting-screw is screwed up untilthe desired pitch is obtained, after which the body of the saw is placed upon it so that one of its teeth will pass between the guides g and rest upon the plane of the anvil, after which the punch-handle is pressed upon, thereby forcing t-he hammer down upon the tooth until the plane of the latter shall have touched the plane of the anvil completely. This bein g done, the punchhandle is released, and the hammeris carried back to its normal position by means of the retracting-spring m. The amount of stock of the tooth to be bent over will be regulated by the adjusting-nut n, which when turned will move the hammer forward or backward, thus accomplishing the result desired.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claiml as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination, with a saw-set having a punch-handle, a horizontal screw-adj usting hammer, a fixed or adjustable anvil, and a saw-adjusting device, of the ixed vertical guides, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with a saw-set having a punch-handle, a horizontal screw-adjusting hammer, a fixed or adjustable anvil, and the vertically-fixed guides, of the saw-adjusting device composed of a single screw, substantially as shown and described.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of N ew York.
CIIAS. MORRILL.
