ICE PLANE.
No.. 447,655. Patented Mar. 3,1891.

NITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
CHARLES BEIV, OF ANGOLA, INDIANA.
ICE-PLAN E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 447,655, dated March 3, 1891.
Application filed September 11, 1889. Serial No. 323,679. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, CHARLEs BEW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Angola, in the county of Steuben and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice-Planes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to ice-planes, and has for its object to provide a twofold adjustment for the bit, whereby the latter can be quickly adjusted to remove any required thickness of shaving and turned down out of the way when not required for use, and can be removed for sharpening and moved forward to compensate for wear.
The improvement consists of the novel features, which hereinafter will be more fully described and claimed, and which are shown in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a plane embodying myinvention. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view showing the bit-support and adj usting devices. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line X X of Fig. 2, showing various ad justments of the bit by dotted lines; Fig. 4, a detail perspective view of the bit holder or support.
The plane-stock A is provided with the usual transverse slot a, through which the shavings escape and the bit B projects. This plane has feet C, which are turned out at their lower ends and are apertured to receive bolts, screws, or other similar fastenings to secure them to a shelf or other support. The tumbler-guide D (half-round) is fastened to the bar (Z, which is secured at its ends to two The bit B is secured to the rotatable support E, preferably by screws 6, which pass through slots 1) in the rear edge of the bit. The bit-support E is journaled at its ends in side flanges of the stock A, and is cut away opposite the bit to form a seat therefor. One end of the support is reduced and threaded and the thumb-nut F is secured on said end. The opposite end of the sup port is exposed to form the thumb-grip G.
\Vhen the thumb-nut F is loosened, the support E can be turned by the grip G'to project the bit B more or less beyond the stock A, or retract it, as required. The support E is held fast by tightening the thumb-nut F. The bit can be removed for sharpening or adjusted to allow for wear by loosening the screws e.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the plane-stock having a bit-opening, a support journaledon the said stock and having a limited movement about its axis, and means for holding the said support rigidly at any adjustment within the prescribed limits, of the slicingknife secured directly to and supported solely by the said support and adapted to be projected a greater or less distance beyond the face of the said plane-stock to cut the required thickness of slice by simply adjusting the said support on its axis, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the plane-stock having a bit-opening, a support journaled on the said stock and having a limited movement about its axis, and means for rigidly holding the said support at any adjustment on its axis, of the slicing-knife and means for adj ust-ably connecting the said knife with the support to compensate for wear, the said knife being adjusted a greater or less distance from the face of the plane-stock to cut the required thickness of slice by adjusting the said support on its axis, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with the plane-stock having depending flanges at its edges, and the rotatable support journaled at its ends in said flanges, one journal being reduced and threaded and the support cut away between its ends to form a flat bearing-surface, of the thumb-nut screwed on the said threaded j ournal and adapted to clamp the flange between it and the shoulder formed by the said reduced journal, and the bit adjustably connected with the cut-away portion of the said support, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES BEW'.
