Description

(No Model.)
' J. s. WRIGHT. BALANCE WHEEL. No. 444,081.
I Patented Jan. 6, 1891.
IA! VENTOH W/Ir 7m ATTORNEY WITH/58858: 7m?
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN S. WVRIGHT, OF GREENFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
BALANCE-WHEEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 444,081, dated January 6, 1891.
Application filed August 19, 18 90.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN S. WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grreenfield, in the county of Franklin and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Balance-Wheels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to balance-wheels for shafting and kindred purposes, and has for its objects the increase or decrease of the mmentu'm of the wheel and the balancing of the same; and my invention consists in certain new and novel details of construction and operation, which will clearly appear from the following description and claim, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents in elevation my invention, the position of the adjustable weights being shown in full and dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section.
A indicates a recessed fly-wheel, which is adapted to be mounted upon a shaft in any desired manner. The hub b is formed of a flange having a length equal to the rim 0, and this hub is provided with a number of holes or sockets 0', adapted to receive the inner ends of a series of screw-rods d, which are prevented from withdrawal, but permitted to revolve by means of the pins 6 entering the annular grooves cl in the screw-rods (Z. The outer Serial No. 362,451. (No model.)
ends or heads of the screw-rods are held in the rim 0, and are provided With the ordinary cut to permit of the screw-rods being turned by a screw-driver. f are the weights, which are bored centrally and screw-threaded to receive the screw-rods d, the revolution of the weights when the rods are turned being prevented by the adjacent straight faces of the weights contacting with the inner straight face of the wheel.
W hen it is desired to increase or diminish the momentum of the wheel or to balance it, the screw-rods are turned to the right or left, as required, and the weights are thereby rection of the turn of the screw.
I claim In a balance-wheel, the combination of a recessed fly-wheel having the hub and rim, as described, the revoluble screw-rods having the annular grooves on their inner ends, said ends being inserted in the hub, the pins engaging the grooves and preventing the withdrawal of the rods, but permitting their revolution, and the outer ends of said rods being passed through the rim, and the weights on said rods adapted to be moved in or out by turning the rods, as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN S. WRIGHT.
