F. JAMES.
UMBRELLA 0R PARASOL.
No. 433,733. Patented Aug. 5, 1890.
WITNESSES: a. o/a
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK JAMES, OF NElV YORK, N. Y.
UMBRELLA OR PARASOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 110,433,733, dated August 5, 1890. Application filed January 31, 1890- Serial No. 335,742- i (No modeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK JAMES, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Umbrellas and Parasols, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to the class of umbrellas or parasols adapted more particularly for childrens carriages; and it consists in a closing device for the bottom of the runner, so constructed that the stick may fully enter said device, thus obviating the employment of a short stick, which affords a slight hold for the catch.
Figure l'represents a vertical section of a portion of an umbrella 0r parasol embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the runner thereof. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of the cap or device for closing the lower end of the runner.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the runner of an umbrella, which, excepting the features of myinvention applied thereto, is of usual construction.
B designates the stick of the umbrella, the same entering the runner and being provided with a catch or retainer C for controlling said runner when the umbrella is opened.
D designates a hollow cap, which is provided with a tubular neck E, the lower end of the latter entering said cap and being secured thereto in any suitable manner, producing a plug or stopper. The upper end of said neck enters the lower end of the runner, and is secured thereto, the means of securing in the present case being the knurl or bead F, which engages with a similar part G on the runner.
It will be seen that when the umbrella is opened the runner receives the stick B, and
is engaged by the catch C, as usual in such cases. The lower end of the stick enters the neck E to the cap D, or approximately so. By this provision the bottom opening of the runner is reliably closed and presents a nice finish, and a longer stick than heretofore may be employed, such stick not being materially weakened by the opening of the catch, the lower part of said opening being removed some distance from the lower end of the stick. Furthermore, the cap and neck may be formed of sheet metal, which produces alight, strong, and serviceable plug, stopper, or closing device for the purpose intended.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A runner for an umbrella or parasol, combined with a closing device having a neck secured to the lower end thereof, and a stick having its lower end entering said neck, substantially as described.
2. A runner for an umbrella or parasol having a hollow neck, and a hollow cap connected with said neck and secured to the runner, and a stick having its lower end entering said neck, substantially as described.
3. Ahollow plug secured to an umbrella or parasol runner at the lower opening thereof, and a stick having its lower end entering said plug, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination of a runner A, having a knurl or bead G, a stick adapted to enter the runner, and a cap with a neck interposed between said stick and runner, said neck having a knurl or bead F to engage said knurl or bead G, substantially as described.
