NITE- STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. THURMOND, OF PERRY, GEORGIA.
BACK-BAND BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,443, dated October 28, 1890.
Application filed March 5 1890.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. THURMOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Perry, in the county of Houston and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Back-Band Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a View illustrating my invention in its application to the harness. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the buckle. Fig. 3 is a section thereof, taken on line as w of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a section taken on line y y of Fig 2.
The invention relates to back-band buckles or hooks, and has for its object to provide a simple and eificient means for adj ustably connecting the back-band to the traces, and to prevent the traces from slipping and chafing the animal.
To these ends the invention consists in the construction of the buckle and in the combination of the parts thereof, as will now be fully described, reference being had to the drawings, in which I have illustrated the buckle as applied to a plow-harness. It will, however, be understood that the improved back-band and trace fastener and ad j uster may be used on other classes of harness.
The buckle B comprises a frame 1), that is provided with a hookextension B, in the outer or hook end I) of which is formed a hole 19 that registers with a like hole b in the said extension. The frame b has two slots S and S for the passage of the backband, the said slots beingprovided along their upper transverse edges with teeths and s, respectively, and from opposite sides of the frame on the line of the cross bar or bridge B between the slots S and S, project boaring-lugs N, in which is journaled the lockinglever H, that is adapted to engage the holes 19 and h in the hook Z) and extension B and a link of the trace-chain. The locking-lever H also serves as a wedging-lever to wedge or look Serial No. 342,774. (No model.)
the back-band to the bridge B of the buckleframe B, it being provided with teeth It, adapted to engage the back-band.
From the upper face of the bridge B project three or more teeth that co-operate with the teeth h on the locking and wedging lever and with the teeth of the buckle-frame slots, thus holding the back-band securely against slipping.
In operation the backhand is slipped from the under side of the buckle-frame Z) first through slot S, thence over bridge B and under the wedging and locking-lever H, which for this purpose is turned back into the position shown in dotted lines inFig. 3, and the back-band is then passed through slot S. The trace is now laid in hook b of extension B and the parts properly adjusted, and when so adjusted the wedging and locking lever is pressed down so as to enter hole b engage a link of the trace, and enter hole I) in extension B, the toothed axis of the lever acting as a cam or eccentric to wedge the back-band. In this manner the back-band is securely held in position by the wedging and locking lever H, the teeth b on the bridge 13 said teeth being arranged slightly in rear of the teeth on lever H, so that the back-band is effectually held against slipping, and, finally, by the teeth 3 and s, projecting into the slots S and S, re spectively.
Whenever it is desired to disconnect the buckle from the trace or adjust the trace or the back-band all that is necessary is to lift the lever, thereby releasing the trace, the back-band being still held by the teeth 3 and 3, said back-band being released from said teeth in a well-known manner, so that the trace can be adjusted independently ofthe back-band, thus providing a single and eificient buckle for the purposes specified.
It is not absolutely necessary that the hook, extension or tongue B be provided with the hole 11*, as it will readily be seen that this may be dispensed with and is used only as a means to provide amore solid bearing for the locking-hook.
Having described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. A back-band buckle comprising abuckle- IOC frame provided with an extension bent upon itself to form a hook, said hook having a hole adapted to register with a correspondinghole in the frame-extension, in combination with alever pivoted to the frame and adapted to lock the back-band thereto, and provided with an arm adapted to engage the holes in the hook-extension of the frame, as and for the purpose set forth. 1
2. A back band buckle comprising the slotted and toothed buckle-frame I), having the hook-extension B, and the hook b, which is provided with a hole adapted to register with a corresponding hole in said extension, in com- CHARLES A. THURMOND.
