Description

(No Model.)
M7.. fi W w N ia... Wi 44 W q. w T m W mm UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES L. HALSTEAD, OF LA CROSSE, VVISCONSIN.
DEVICE FOR SECURING HOSE-BANDS.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent N o.V 436,706, dated September 16, 1890.
i Application filed July 30, 1890` Serial No. 360,409- (No model.)
To all wiz/0m it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES L. HALSTEAD, a citizen of the United States, residing at La Orosse, in the county of La Orosse and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Securing Hose-Bands, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same.
My inveution relates to an improvement in hose-hands and a device for attaching them to the hose.
The objects of my invention are: First, a band or strap for securing hose to couplings, 'nozz1es, &c.; second, a device for applying the same around the hose, so that it shall be drawn so tight that the hose will be closely compressed against 'the coupling, thereby preventng leakage and rigidly fastening the same together. I attain said object bya certain combination, construction, and arrangement of parts, fully described in this specification, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure 1 is a perspective view of said device. Fig. 2 is an end view illustrating the same when iu use. Fig. 8 is a view of -the hose-band specially adapted to my device. Fig. 4 is a view of a piece of hose with the band fastened around the same.
My invention comprises two bent levers A and B, pivoted together at G, so that by compressing the handles a and b the jaws a' and b' of my device are opened. The jaw a' is shorter than the jaw b' and has a flange (L2, for the purpose of engaging the cross-bar portion d of the band D. The jaw b' is constructed Wit-h the slots 122 in the end of the same, which are adapted to receive and hold the ends C22 of the hose-band D. Upon the top of the jaw b' there is pivoted the wedge E, which is forced in between the ends d2 of the hose-band with a view of securely holding the same and preventing them from pulling through the slots 192 when the device is in operation. Between said levers there is located a spiral spring F, which closes the jaws of the device.
The hose-band D is constructed, as shown in Fig. 3, with the cross-bar d and the ends cl2 curved outwardly and bent around to such an eXtent as to form a ring.
In applying the band D the ends are placed through the cross-bar (Z, as shown in Fig. 2, and theband is then adjusted to the hose at the point to be secured. The device is then applied (see Fig. 2) and the handles are compressed together, which tightly draws the band around the hose, after which the ends of the band are bent down, as shown in Fig. 4.
VVhat I claim is 1. In a device for applying hose hands or wires, the combination of two levers pivoted to each other, the jaw of one of said levers having in its end two slots and a wedge pivoted upon the top of the same, and the jaw of the other of said levers having a fiangeshaped end, substantially as dcscribed, and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a device for securng hose-hands, the combination of the two bent levers pivoted to each other, the jaw of one of said levers having in its end two slots and a wedge pivoted upon the top of same, the jaw of the other of said levers having a fiange-shaped endLand the spiral spring located between said levers, substantially as described and set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES L. HALSTEAD.
Witnesses:
MARTIN BERGH, ELLA BRAKKE.
