UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREXV B. LIPSEY, OF EST HOBOKEN, NEXV JERSEY.
STOVE-LID.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 426,190, dated April 22, 1890.
Application filed December 4, 1889. $eria1 No. 332,571. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW B. LIPsEY, of West Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Stove-Lids, of which the following is a specification.
My improvement relates to lids which are used with cooking-stoves. Usually these consist of a bridge-lid and two circular pot-hole lids. These lids are liable to become overheated and to not only suffer damage in consequence thereof, but to entail damage upon articles placed upon them.
The object of my improvementis to pre- V vent stove-lids from becoming unduly heated;
and to this end the improvement consists in a construction whereby a circulation of airis afforded between the lid and a plate secured to the under side of the lid and engaging with ribs which vary in projection from the lid.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of the top of the stove havinglids constructed in accordance with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section thereof, taken at the plane of the dotted line cc :0, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical section of one of the lids, taken at the plane of the dotted line am, Fig. 1. Fig. at is avertical section of a portion of one of the lids, taken in a plane at right angles to that of Fig. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4, but illustrating a'lnodified construction.
Similar letters and numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A designates a stove of ordinary construction having a fire-pot a and a flue to extending laterally from the fire-pot just below the top of the stove and communicating with a flue 6 that communicates with apipe a leadin g to a chimney.
b O D designate lids fitted to the top of the stove. The lid 13 is made in the form of a bridge-lid, and the lids O D are round lids. These lids are set into the recesses formed in the top of the stove, the lids O D being also set'in recesses in the bridge-lid B. These lids may be of ordinary construction, excepting that they are provided with passages through which air may circulate from above the top of the stove into the fine a. As here shown, each lid has extending across its under side ribs 0" N, which decrease in projection toward the ends and terminate at the marginal ribs or flanges Z) c d, with which the lids are, as usual, provided. These ribs 0* 0' have fitted to them plates 1), which lap over the edges of said ribs, and are so shaped longitudinally as to conformgto the varying projection of the ribs. These plates extend to the marginal flanges Z) e (Z; hence they, in conjunction with these marginal flanges and the ribs 0' r form duets or passages through which air may circulate. Between the pairs of ribs 0' r and near one end of them the lids are provided with holes h. These afford provision for the insertion of a litter and also allow the entrance of air from above the top of the stove.
a. The plates 19 may be secured by screws 8,
passing through their central portions and entering hubs or bosses 1), formed on the under side of the lids.
In the construction shown in Fig. 4 the plates 19 have side flanges 1 2, which fit inside of the ribs r 0' butin the construction shown in Fig. 5 the lateral portions of the plates 1) have in their upper edges grooves 3 at, which fit the edges of the ribs 0* r 7 I do not wish to be restricted to making an air-duct in a lid in precisely the manner described, although that is a very efficient way of providing for a duct.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of a stove-lid having a hub and ribs on its under side, the ribs decreasing in projection toward the ends, and a plate lapping over the edges of the ribs and conforming longitudinally to the varying proj ection thereof, the said plate being secured to the hub and having flanges to fit against the ribs, the lid and the plate having a passage for air, substantially as specified.
ANDREW B. LIPSEY.
