' I Nrrn STATES ATENT OFFICE.
HIRAM MYERS, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO.
CULTIVATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 426,136, dated April 22, 1890.
Application filed October 7, 1889. Serial No. 326,270. (No model.)
T0 @ZZ whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, IIIRAM MYERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in cultivators.
The object of my invention is to provide a cultivator of simple construction which shall be capable of ready adjustment to any work required thereof and at the same time be capable of easy and rapid manijjiulation when in operation.
My invention consists in the various constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described, and set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawiugs, which form a part of this specification, Figure l is a side elevation of a cultivator embodying my invention, one of the carrying-wheels being removed. Fi g. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a partial sectional view of one of the beams and its attachment shown in detail. Fig. et is a similar view showing the beam in a different position of adjustment, some of the parts being slightly modied in their construction. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view on the line X X in Fig. 3. Fig. G is a detail view, partly in section, showing the manner of attaching the hangers to the main frame.
Like parts are represented by similar letters of reference throughout the several views.
In the said drawings, A A represent the main frame of the device, which is essentially rectangular and preferably formed of gaspipe joined together by elbow-connections, as shown.
The operating parts of the cultivator are attached to the frame by means of hangers B each of which consists, essentially, of two U -shaped pieces d of flat metal, each provided at their upper extremities with an eye or opening a', adapted to fit over the sides of the frame A A and be secured thereon in any desired position by a clamping-bolt d2 or in any other well-known and suitable manner.
Secured in each of the hangers B, and e5;-I
tending across the U-shaped piece cl, in the lower rear corner thereof, are 'the Wheehsupporting spindles I). These spindles project out a suitable distance from the hangers B and support the carrying-wheels b. Immediately forward of these spindles b in the opposite corner of each of the hangers is secured a bearing support c, journaled in snitable bearings c in said hangers. These bearing-supports c are each provided with a semicircular top or table c2, having a circular depression c* therein, in which rests a projecting boss d on the beam-supporting pieces D. The.beam-supporting pieces D are each pivoted to the bearingsupports c by a bolt c5 and are adapted to turn thereon, the said bolt passing through the center of the boss d and depression c3, as shown in Fig.
G O are the beams, which are each pivoted at their inner ends to the beam-supporting pieces D, the said beam-supporting pieces D being bifurcated and provided on each side with projecting flanges d,between which the beam O rests and `to which it is connected by a pivot-bolt d2.
Immediately back of the flanges CZ and at right angles thereto are projecting lugs d3 on the beam-supporting pieces D. These projecting lugs (Z3 are each bored out to receive a spring-bolt d, which passes through said lugs and is provided with a spring dl, adapted to be compressed between the head of the spring-bolt d5 and one of the projectinglugs d3.
Connected to the end of each of the beams O is a connecting-clip c, and extending from this clip to a similar clip c on the springbolt (l5 is a connecting-link e2. The pivoted connection (Z2 of the beam C is placed in line with the center of the spring-bolt d5, so that when the beam is parallel to said spring-bolt the connecting-link e2 is also parallel thereto and the pivoted connections are inline. As the rear end of the beam carrying the cultivator shovels is elevated the parts are brought to the position shown in Fig. 4, and the spring-bolt (Z5 is, by the spring di, forced outwardly and is connected with the link e, and the pivoted joint (Z2 exerts a pressure on the beam C, which tends to raise the same and hold it in an elevated position. When the beam C is lowered below the center, areverse action is obtained, the spring being adapted to operate to 'force the beam downwardly and hold it in a downward. position.
TOO
vss
By the arrangement of' the parts as thus described it will be seen that the spring acts with increased force as the beam is. moved farther from the center in either direction. The beam C rests above the spindle l).
Attached to the beam C and projecting downwardly under the spindle l), I provide a hook or U-shaped bearing f to prevent the beam and its supporting-pieces from turning in a vertical plane in the bearing c. Sufficient latitude, however, is left in said bearing fte permit the beam to be adjusted laterally about the pivoted connection c5, as is desired.
Between thegspindle Z2Y and the beam C, I preferably provide a friction-roller f', joui'- naled at each end on bearings f, and adapted to travel on the spindle b and roll thereon as the beam is moved laterally.
The tongue Eis secured to the main frame A A, and is preferably.attached thereto at the rear end so as to turn thereon, the frontside of the frame being provided with upwardly-projecting iianges 71 secured by setscrews or otherwise to the frame A, and provided with a series of openings h', by which the angular position of the tongue and frame may be adjusted, as desired.
The beams C are each provided with a suitable handle k and shovels Z Z of any wellknown construction.
The hitch-rod m, extending from the frame A A to each of the hangers B,is provided for making the hitch, the said hitch-rod being preferably connected at the bottoni through a spring-connection m in a well-known manner.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a cultivator, the combination, with a rectangular frame, of the U-shaped hangers depending below said frame and adjustably connected thereto at their upper extremities, wheel-supporting spindles in said hangers, and vertically and longitudinally adjustable beams pivoted in said hangers, substantially as speciiied.
2. The combi n ation, with a rectan guiar horizontal frame, of supporting -hangers each formed of two U-shapcd depending pieces adj ustably connected at their upper ends to said frame, each of said hangers being provided with a wheel-supporting spindle and a pivoted bearingsupport, a beam-supporting piece pivoted to said bearing-support, an d a beam pivoted in said beam-supporting piece at right angles to the pivoted connection between the beam-supporting piece and bearing-support, substantially as speciiied.
3. The combination, with the hangers, of a pivoted bearing-support having a laterally-adj ustable beam-supporting piece pivoted thereto,a pivoted beam connected to said supporting piece, a longitudinally-moving springbolt in suitable bearings directly in front `of said beam, and a connecting-link from said spring-bolt to said beam, substantially as specified.
4. The combination, with the bearing-support journaled in the hanger, as described, of the beam-supporting piece pivotedthereto, the beam pivoted to said beam-supporting piece, and a longitudinally-moving springbolt supported in suitable bearings on said supporting-piece in line with the pivoted connection between the supporting-piece and beam, a spring on said bolt, and a connecting-link between said bolt and spring, substantially as specified.
5. The combination, with the hanger and a` wheel-supporting spindle, of the bearing-support pivoted thereon, the beam-supl'iorting piece laterally adjustable on said bearingsupport, a spring-bolt in suitable bearings on said supporting-piece, a beam pivoted between projecting flanges on said supportingpiece, a connecting-link between said springbolt and the end of said beam, a friction-roller between said beam and spindle, and a bearing under said spindle connected to said beam, substantially as specified.
C. The combination, with a pivoted beam, of a longitudinally-moving spring-bolt held against Vlateral movement in suitable bearings, a spring connected to said spring-bolt, so as to be compressed by a longitudinal movement thereof, and a connecting-link between said spring-bolt and the end of said beam, the beam end ot said connecting-link being adapted to pass the center of said spring-bolt andbring the pressure of said spring on opposite sides of said beam as the beam is raised or lowered, substantially as speciiied. .f
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 30th day of September, A. D. 1889.
