ICE P10K. 110. 419,911. Patented 131121.18110.
N. PETERS. PholLiehognphar. washngmn. 11C,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES BEV, OF ANGOLA, INDIANA.
ICE-PICK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 419,911, dated January 21, 1890.
Application filed September 1l, 1889. Serial No. 323,680. (No model.) o
To all wwm it may concern:
Beit known that I, CHARLES BEW, a citizen of' the United States, residing at Angola, in the county of Steuben and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice-Picks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part lof this specification.
This invention relates to a combination ice pick and holder.
The improvement consists in the novel features which hereinafter will be more fully described and claimed, and which are shown in the annexed drawings, in whichm Figure 1 is a side view showing the application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line X X, looking to the left. Fig. 3 is a section on the said line X X, looking to the right. Figli is a top plan view of the end of the pick.
The pick or rod A is flattened at d, which flattened portion is toothed, as shown in Fig. 4, and is provided at its opposite end with the handle C and the fixed clamping-jaw B. The movable clamping-jaw D, mounted ou the pick, is operated on by, the spring G, placed on said pick and pressing against the said jaw D. The stop or shoulder g at the end of the pick limits the movement of the spring and protects the spring when the pick is being used for ehoppingice. The movable jaw D is provided with the handle d, which, in connection with the handle C, forms a con.
venient handle to be grasped when. manipulating the holder. To give steadiness to the clamping-jaw D, it is provided with the short tubular projection H, which slides on the pick.
The pick is used in the ordinary manner, and when used for gripping a chunk of ice the jaw D is moved away from jaw B and the ice placed between thetwo jaws. The spring G is sufficiently strong to press the jaw D on the ice with sufficient force to hold the said ice firmly. Y
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*- l. The combination, with the pick or rodA and the jaw B, of the movable jaw D and the spring G, substantially as described.
2. The combination, With the pick or rod A and the jaw B, of the jaw D, having tubular projection, and the spring G,substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the pick A, having the annular shoulder g at its outer end and the jaw B at the inner end of the said pick, of the movable jaw and the spring G, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. The combination, with the pick A, having` handle C and the' jaw B, of the movable jaw D, having the handle (l, and the spring G, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature 7o in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES BEW.
