SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 418,661, dated December 31, 1889.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALFRED T. TREGURTHA, of Everett, in the county of MiddleseX and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machine- Treadles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention consists of a treadle pivoted to anysuitable support for operation thereof,

The treadle has a foot piece or pad E, pivoted at F, so as to swing vertically thereon within certain limits, having a stud or projection G,
0 and a spring H, adapted to bear against its under side and secured to the treadle at a.
J is a standard secured to the support 0 and having on its outer edge a series of notches b, with which notches the stud of the foot- 3 5 piece on the treadle is arranged to engage when the lever is swung down, (see Figs. 1
and 2,) the standard being secured in such position in relation to the treadle-pivot that when moved down into the position shown in 0 Fig. 1 its stud will engage with any one of the notches desired. With the treadle moved down and its stud engaged with a notch, the
foot-piece is held by the resistance of the machine or othermechanisin connected to the treadle to such engagement, and thus the treadle is held in such position, being looked,
as it were. The stud of the foot-piece is in such relative position to the pivot of the footpiece that when the treadle is so locked the greater the resistance of the machine to the treadle the more positive and firmer is it held in such posit-ion, preventing accidental detachment.
To release the treadle, press it down slightly and swing the foot-piece down at its front edge d, which releases its stud from its engagement with the notch, and being held in such position it is free to pass by the notches, so that then the treadle can rise into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. By this attachment to a treadle it can be easily and conveniently-locked in the position desired and as easily unlocked.
If desired, the'spring can be dispensed with,
although it is preferable to use it.
In lieu of having the projection or stud G on the foot-piece, it can engage by its rear edge with the notched bar; but it is preferable to have a projection.
Having thus described myinvention, what a I claim i's 1. A machine-treadle having a foot-piece pivoted thereto and provided on one end with a projection or stud adapted to engage by the swinging of the foot-piece with a notched bar or standard, for the purpose specified.
