GAS-PRESSURE REGULATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,136, dated December 10, 1889.

Be it known that I, HAROLD J. BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gloucester City, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gas-Pressure Regulators, of which t-he following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of gaspressure regulators in which the varying pressure of gas delivered to the regulating apparatus is controlled and made uniform by the action of the gas on a flexible rising-and-falling diaphragm with which the regulatingvalves are connected.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter setforth, with reference to the annexed drawing, which represents a vertical section of a gas-pressure regulator el'nbodying my improvements.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a casing provided with a detachable cover 2, having a vent-pipe 3 connected to its top. 1n the upper part of this casing, between itsbody and cover, is secured a ilexible diaphragm 4, composed of rubber, leather, or other suitable material. This diaphragm et is provided with a central rigid portion 5, having a central opening, in which is secured the upper eXternally-screw-threaded end of a depending partly tubular stem 6, tothe upper end of` which is attached an internallythreaded cap 7, by which said diaphragm and stem are connected. The cap 7 and the connected tubular end of the stem 6 form a vertically-elongated valve-chamber 8, havin g an outlet-openin g f) in its upper end and an inletopening `10 in its lower end. The inlet-opening 10 communicates with an open-ended 4o passage 117 formed transversely through the stem (i beneath the diaphragm. In the valvechamber S is loosely placed an elongated vertically-movable valve-plug 12, which forms, with said chamber, an automatic safety reliefvalve for protecting the flexible diaphragm -l from the injurious e'tl'ects of excessive pressure.
In one side of the casing l, below the diaphragm, is an outlet-opening 13 for the attachment of a gas-delivery pipe, and in the Serial No. 313,328. (No model.)
opposite side of the casing is an opening in which a gas-inlet pipe 14 is inserted. On the inner end of the gas-inlet pipe 14, within the casing 1, is a valve-casing 15, which is pro vided at. top and bottom with vertically-elongated gas-passages 16 and 17, that communicate directly with the interior of the regular tor-casing. The gas-inlet pipe 14 is secured by a nut 1S on its outer externally-threaded portion, and is provided within the casing 1 6o with a depending'ilange or arm 19, through which is passed one end of a screw-bolt 20, that is engaged with the casing-wall, thereby preventing the pipe-14 and attached valveseat chamber 15 from turning.
To the lower end of the diaphragm-stem (5 is pivoted one end of a lever2l, the other end of which is fulcrumed in a knife-edged opening or slot 22, that is formed in the flange or arm 1 9 of the gas-inlet pipe. This lever 21 is 7c pivotally connected to a lug or lugs 23 on the lower part or end of avertical valve-stem 24, that carries the regulating-valves 25 and 26, and which valve-stem is preferably formed in separable parts, as shown. The elongated waive-seat gas-passages 16 and 17 form guideways for feathers or wing-guides 27, that are formed on the valve-stem 24 at or near .its ends. As shown, the valves 25 and 2G consist of annular disks preferablycomposed of 8c elastic or exible material that will readily scat in a true and proper manner on the ends of the annular tlangeslt and 17, that form the gas-passages of the valve-casing. The valvestem 24; is formed in separable parts connected 8 5 by screw-bolts 2S, carried by one 'part and engaging threaded recesses in the adjoining part. On the adjoining parts of the valvestem are flanges 20, between which the flexible or elastic valve-disks 25 and 2G are re- 9o eeived. It will be observed that the upper valve 25 is located in the valve-easing 15, between the gas-passages 16 and 17, while the lower valve 2U is outside said chamber and beneath the lower gas-passage 1.7, leading therefrom. The upper end of the gas-passage 17 is formed into a valve-seat for the valve 25 to seat downward upon, and on said upper valve-seat, in connection with the valve-seat 30 of the gas-passage 17, constitute what I roo term a duplex valve-seat at the lower-end portion of the valve-casing l5.
Gas admitted to the apparatus through the upper passage 1G accumulates beneath the eXible diaphragm -LL and exerts a pressure thereon whereby it is lifted, so as to actuate the lever 2l and carry the valves 25 and 2G upward into position to permit the flow of gas through both passages l and 17 at normal pressure. Should the pressure become excessive, the valves 25 and 26 will be elevated.
still farther and carried nearly or quite into contact with the depending valve-seats 30, where they will remain momentarily until the pressure beneath the diaphragm is relieved, so as to permit the valves to lower. In this way the rise and fall of the fiexible diaphragm acting through the stem (5 and lever 2l on the vertically-movable regulating-valves and 26 will automatically and constantly control the pressure of gas delivered by the apparatus.
What I claim as my invention is- A gas-pressure regulator consisting of an outer casing comprising a gas-chamber containing a exible diaphragm and having a gas-inlet and a gas-outlet, a valve-chamber located within the gas-chamber, opening atits upper and lower ends directly into the latter beneath the diaphragm, and provided at its lower end portion with a duplex valve-seat and in its upper end portion with an internal depending valve-seat, a valve-stem having two valves both of which close at different times on the lower duplex valve-seat and one of which closes upwardly against the internal valve-seat, and a lever supported at one end below the valve-casing, connected at its other end with the diaphragm-stem and between its ends sustaining the valve-stern, substan-V tially as described.
