JEAN NICHOLAS MULLER, OF NEIV ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
PORTABLE FU RNAC E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,068, dated November 26, 1889.
Application filed December 27. 1888- Serial No. 294,817. (No model.)
To all whom it iii/coy concern:
Be it known that 1, JEAN NICHOLAS M'L' L- LER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New Orleans, Orleans parish, State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Portable Furnaces, of which the following is a full and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
This invention is adapted for burning charcoal, and is especially intended for use in southern countries, where in warm weather most persons do a certain amount of cooking and ironing in the open air.
In the construction of my improved furnace I dispense with the ordinary chimneys or fines and provide the fire-bed with sufficient open space for the admission of the requisite amount of air to keep the fuel in a steady glow.
My furnace is provided with a removable ash-pan, in the front of which are draft-openings and regulating-dampers, and the top of the furnace is composed of hinged gratings for supporting the cooking utensils and sadirons either immediately above the burning fuel or at one side of the same, as hereinafter more fully described.
My improvements also consist in certain details of construction, all of which are hereinafter fully described and specifically claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved furnace with its tile-sides omitted. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the furnace complete. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the furnacebed. Fig. 4: is a plan of the top of the furnace; and Fig. 5 is a vertical longitudinal section through the line :20 0c of Fig. 4.
The letter A designates the legs of the furnace. The inner portion of each leg is provided at a certain distance from the top thereof with a lug b, having a vertical perforation therein for the reception of a bolt 0, whereby the leg is secured to one of the corners of the furnace-bed D, which for said purpose is provided with bolt-holes, as shown at e in Fig. 3. Each side of the furnace-bed D is provided with a raised flange f, of sufficient length to abut against the adjacent edges of the legs A. Between the flanges f,
the sides of the furnace, and which are securely held in position by the aforesaid raised flanges and grating, as well as by reason of their abutting beveled ends, as shown at a.
Slides Z Z are cast or otherwise secured near the ends of the under surface of the furnacebed, as shown in Fig. 5, to support a removable ash-pan M, the front of which is provided with ventilating-openings n n and with dampers o o, the latter secured to the inner ends of the eyebolts p p, by means of which they are regulated as required.
The top of the furnace is composed of two grate-sections R R, which, if desired, may be made with pot-holes and ornamental openwork around the same; but an ordinary grating-such as is shown in the drawingswill serve all practical purposes. Each grate-section has one of its ends provided with a pair of lugs or half-hinges 1) b having horizontal perforations therein for the reception of the rods 0', the ends of which are journaled in lugs cl, that are cast or secured to the upper part of the legs A, as shown in the different figures of the drawings. The outer edge of the lugs 01' half-hinges b b are made with flat surfaces and projecting ends 6'', which are intended to abut against the end of the furnace when the grate-sections are swung outward, and thus serve as brackets to hold the said gratings in horizontal positions.
For purposes of transportation the rods 0 are provided at or about the center of each with a handle 6'', as shown in Fig. 4, and the furnace-bed may be made with projecting handles 6 at each end thereof, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, to facilitate its removal.
Particular attention is called to the fact that in the construction of this furnace I dispense with the ordinary outer metal casing which heretofore has been requisite for holding the fire-pot sections or linings in their relative positions. I am thus enabled to furnish a lighter and cheaperfurnace, any part of which can be readily removed and a new piece substituted therefor with but little trouble or expense.
Having described my invention, what I ICO claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, in a portable furnace, of a furnace-bed provided with a raised central grating and vertical side flanges, as described, with the legs A, adapted to fit be tween the ends of the aforesaid flanges to hold the tile-sides-of the furnace, substantially as specified.
2. In combination with a furnace-bed having a raised central grating and vertical side flanges, as described, the tiles 70', adapted to fit between the aforesaid raised center and side flanges, the legs A, and the bolts, whereby the aforesaid parts are securely held together, sub- I5 stantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In combination with a portable furnace composed mainly of the legs'A, furnace-bed D, and tile-sides 7c, the grate-sections R R, hinged to the upper part of the furnace-legs to support the cooking utensils, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JEAN NICHOLAS MULLER. Vitnesses:
GEo. D. FISHER, H. M. BRADFORD.
