JAMES I). CLEEK, OF ABINGDON, VIRGINIA.
VEHICLE-SPRING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,053, dated November 26, 1889.
Application filed Augu 17, 1889. Serial No. 321,054. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMEs D. CLEEK, a cit-izen of the United States, and a resident of Abingdon, in the county of Washington and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle-Springs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a top view. Fig. 2 is partly a side view and partly a section.
The object of the invention is to provide a compound elliptic spring, in which the springplates will be well bound together while preserving their freedom of motion; and the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the main spring-plate, the ends of which are provided with eyes B in the usual manner.
0 indicates the spring-plate which is next to the spring=plate A, and shorter than the latter, its ends being gradually beveled, as at D, to correspond with the angular position of the capping-plates E, which overlie said ends, as shown.
F indicates a shorter spring-plate, which is placed upon the spring-plate O and is formed-with the gradually-beveled ends G,
- which extend under the oapping-plates.
' Each capping-plate consists of a metallic plate E, of sufficient length to extend from the eye of the main spring-plate over the beveled ends of the shorter spring-plates and being of equal breadth to said springplates. The capping-plate is provided with the thickness of the main spring-plate. The upper or inner portion of each capping-plate is also provided with side lugs K, which are also bent downw rd at right angles to the plane of the capping-plate and are longer than the lugs H, being long enough to project below the main spring-plate. The projecting ends of the lugs K are perforated, as indicated at L, to receive the ends of the transverse bearing-rod m, which may be provided with an anti-friction roller; or the projecting ends of said lugs K may be bent to extend toward each other under the main spring-plate to form the under bearing of the capping-plate. The upper or inner end portion of the capping-plate, which overlies the beveled end of the shortest spring-plate, is preferably narrowed gradually to an angular point, as shown, to lessen the frictional bean ing on the short spring and to give said bearing an elastic or yielding character, as it is designed that the capping-plate, while holding the ends of the spring-plates together in compact form shall not interfere with their freedom of movement.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. 1s
The compound vehicle-spring consisting of the main spring-plate, having its ends provided with eyes to receive fastening or conneetin g bolts, the gradually-shortened springplates overlying the main spring-plate and having beveled ends, and the capping-plates covering said beveled ends of the shorter plates and having inward narrowed or tapered ends or points overlying the beveled ends of the uppermost 'spring-plate, said cappingplates having side pendent lugs, the outer lugs extending downward at the side edges of the main spring-plate slightly inward from the end eyes of the latter plate, the inner lugs being connected together below the main spring-plate, substantially as set forth.
I11 testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES D. CLEEK.
\Vitnesses E. O. ROBERTS, H. S. PRESTON.
