Description
P. F. CARR.
Implements for Cleaning Bores of Fire-arms. N0. 41,481. Patented Feb. 9, 1864.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
PETER FRANCIS CARR, OF W'YALUSING, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPLEMENT FOR CLEANING THE BORES OF GUN-BARRELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 41,481, dated February 9, 1864.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER FRANCIS CARR, of Company B, 14th Regiment of Indiana Volunteers, have invented a new and Improved Device for Cleaning the Bores ofi Small-Arms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this sp cification, in which- Figure lis a side View of the device. Fig. 2is a transverse section ot the same. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section of the same, showing it attached to the ramrod of a gun.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This device consists of a cylindrical plunger, which has its periphery composed of indiarubber or other soft elastic material coated with or having incorporated into it emery or other scouring or polishing material, and which is fitted with ascrew and not by which it may be expanded circumferentially to make it fitas tightly as desired into the bore of the arm, and is furnished with a screwed socket by which it is screwed to the ramrod when the gun requires to be cleaned.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A represents the body of the plunger, composed of a cylindrical piece of vulcanized india-rubber coated with or having incorpo rated into it fine emery of a length of about three-quarters of an inch and of such external diameter that in its normal condition it will pass freely within the bore of the fire-arm in which it is to be used. This cylinder has a hole, a,right-through its center for the reception of the screw B, which passes right through it.
1 This screw has a broad=thin head, a, which l fits against one end of the cylinder A, and is fitted with a nut. O, which screws up against E the opposite end oi'the said cylinder, the said nut being so constructed as to be easily turned with the fingers. On the point of this screwthat is to say, the end farthest from the head a-there is firmly and permanently secured a socket, D, which is screwed internally to fit the screw 0, provided on the small end of the ramrod E of the gun, space enough being left between the said socket and the cylinderA to permit the proper operation of the nut (3.
When the gun requires cleaning, the bodyA is inserted into the muzzle of the gun, and the nut O screwed up to compress the india-rubber longitudinally, and thus produce its expansion circumferentially to a degree to make it fit with sufficient tightness within the bore and enter the grooves thereot. The ramrod is then screwed into the socket D, and the cleaning and polishing of the barrel is tlnn etfected by working the ramrod back and forth.
If pret'erred, the device may be attached to the ramrod before inserting it into the barrel.
hat 1 claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A device for cleaning and polishing the bores of firearms, com posed of a plunger-like body, A, of india-rubber or other elastic material, coated with or having incorporated into it emery or other scouring or polishing material, a screw, B, nut G, and socket D, the whole combined substantially as herein specified.
PETER FRAN CIS CARR.
