Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
T. E. NORTH, OF MCALLISTERVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 40.180, dated October 6, 1863.
To all whom it may concern:
Bc it known that I, T. E. NORTH, of Mc- Allistcrville, in the county of Juniata. in the Sta-te of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Washing Clothes; and I do hereby declare that the following' is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure l represents a side elevation, and Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal vertical section.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation, which consists of a wash-board, A, and a concave made of rollers B, being joined together b v means ot' a hinge, and both having regular curves till near the top of board A, where it inclines a little out of curve, forming a semicircle, or nearly so, designed to be placed in tub D, of similar shape, to which the fore part, A, is fastened by means of two adjustable pins, O, inserted through sides of tub D. The concave B rests upon four spiralsprings, which rest upon the bottom of tub D. The tub D has two upright posts, E, on the outsidein the center, having slides F in the top, through which passes shaft Gr, to which is suspended a frame, H, by means of two arms, I, containing a revolving cylinder, J, which is composed of rollers, every other one of which is pinned fast, so that while one rolls the next to it rubs,
being a swinging` revolving rolling cylinder, having asweep fitting upon the Whole 0r nearly the whole of the concave A B.
N N are two adjustable pins inserted between the frame H and the cylinder J to change it from a swinging rolling cylinder into a swinging friction rubber cylinder.
O O are four buttons screwed on the top edge of tub D, which may be so adjusted as to hold the frame H stationary while the c) linder J is being revolved by an adjustable crank. K, inserted through the hole L in the side of tub l).
M is an adjustable top rubber, concave on the under side, having two arms extending over the top, which are fastened to the frame H by means of a strap, as shown in the drawings.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The wash-board A and the concave made of rollers B, combined with the swinging revolving rolling cylinder, the two adjustable pins N between frame H and cylinder'J, and the concave top rubber, M, substantially as and for the purpose specitied.
T. E. NORTH.
