0. A. OOOLEY. COMBINED LAMP SHADE OR REFLECTOR AND GUARD. No. 401,416. Patented Apr. 16, 1889.
waxmsvs UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
CHARLES A. COOLEY, OF MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 401,416, dated April 16, 1889. Application filed October 11, 1888. Serial No. 287,835. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES A. COOLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Montreal, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Lamp Shades or Reflectors and Guards, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a combined device serving as a reflector or shade and guard or protector for incandescent or other lamps.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature which by slight manipulation maybe adjusted to the lamp, dispensing with the usual complicated operation of first securing the shade upon the lamp and then adjusting the guard. The construction of the lamp and socket is not always such as to facilitate or offer means for attaching a shade and holder as separate devices to the same, whereas there is usually accommodation for one of them. By using my device any lamp may be equipped with both the reflector and guard by making a single connection.
The device is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the device attached to a lamp, and Fig. 2 a section of the device without the lamp.
A represents the portion constituting the shade or reflector. This may be of any improved form or design; but it is preferably made of metal and provided with a polished reflecting interior surface.
B is a wire cage or guard, which may also be of any desired pattern. The upper end of the guard is secured to the reflector by turning back the ends of the wires of the guard and soldering them in place; or the ends of the wires may be secured by small screws.
The reflector is formed with a central opening large enough to allow the lamp-globe to pass through the same into the cage, and the cage is placed immediately in front of or beneath the opening in the reflector.
The device is attached to the lamp by passing it up over the same and adjusting the screws or other clamping devices upon the shade-ring secured to the lamp-socket.
Having described my invention, 1 claim- 1. The combination of a reflector and a guard for the light or lamp, the guard being rigidly secured to the reflector, as described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a reflector or shade rigidly secured to a cage or guard, the whole being provided with attaching devices for securing it to a lamp.
3. A lamp reflector or shade having an opening large enough to admit a lamp, in combination with a guard for said lamp rigidly secured to the reflector, as setforth.
i. A lamp reflector or shade having an opening large enough to admit a lamp, in combination with a guard for said lamp rigidly secured to the reflector directly in front of the opening in said reflector.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES A. COOLEY.
