To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. STUBBs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairfield, in the county of Jefferson and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Necktie-Fasteners and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to that class of fasteners which are sewed or otherwise secured to neckties in order to receive the free end of the strap which passes round the neck or collar and secure the same against displacement;

and it has for its object to provide a simple inexpensive device of this character, which may be readily attached to the necktie, will be easily operated, either to secure or release the strap, and which will hold the strap firmly when secured; and it consists of the parts and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device, showing a strap, in dotted lines, secured thereby; Fig. 2, a like view showing the lever raised, or the device in position to receive the strap; and Fig. 3, a like view of the lever and plate detached.

A represents a plate, of any suitable light or sheet spring metal, the out-lines of which may be struck in any suitable design to increase its attractive appearance. At the center of the plate a spring B is formed by cutting or stamping through the plate from near one end of the same to near the other end along the sides of the plate, as indicated at a. Near the center of the plate at each side, between the cut or opening formed therein and the outer edges of the plate, the metal is struck up, as at b, so as to stand at this point slightly above the upper surface or level of the spring B, the struck-up portion being arched or rounded. At suitable points near the outer edges of the plate perforations c are formed, whereby the plate may be sewed or stitched to the necktie. At one end of the spring B an opening 0, having at one end two teeth or prongs g, is formed in order to receive the tongue D of the operating-lever E to clamp the strap securely in place, as shown in Fig. 1. The lever is formed of a single piece of metal having an oblongor elliptical opening (I, the width of plate A, from the center of the upper part of which, at one side, the tongue D is formed curving forward, opposite to which on the outer side the projecting handle or thumb-piece e is formed, which curves over slightly to prevent the handle catching in the clothing of the person wearing the necktie when the same is closed or shut down. The lower edge or part of the lever is cut through, as at the point marked f, in order to insert the same under the struckup portion 1) from side to side above or over the spring B, and may then be soldered or welded together again, if desired, to retain it in place. At each side of the plate 1. form shoulders e, which limit the backward movement of the lever in opening or raising the same.

The operation is as follows: The device being first secured to the necktie in a suitable position and the lever raised, as shown in Fig. 2, thus bending or forcing the spring down at its center, owing to the fact that the bottom or lowerpart of the lever is thus brought 011 its edge, the free end of the strap is then passed through the opening d and drawn till the necktie is in its proper position, when the lever is turned down on the plate, its tongue forcing that part of the strap over opening G into said opening between the tongue and the prongs or teeth g, thus holding said strap securely in place. The tongue being curved forward and the teeth curving slightly upward above the plate further prevents the withdrawal of the strap while the lever is down. Thus it will be observed that by the use of but two parts I construct a simple, durable, and easily-operated fastener, specially adapted to hold the strap securely in position.

the metallic plate having perforations round its edges, a central spring portion separated from said plates at its sides, said central portion having an opening at one end and teeth or prongs formed at one end of said opening, and a lever pivotally mounted between the spring-section and the plate-sides, said lever being formed of a single piece of metal having an oblong or elliptical central opening, a

curved handle or thumb-piece projecting from I the upper edge of said lever, and a tongue projecting from the opposite edge of and at right angles to said lever, whereby the strap of the necktie may be inserted in the oblong opening and clamped between the tongue and y the teeth or pron gs, substantially as described.
