IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification forming part ot1 Letters Patent No. 39,279., dated July 21, 1863.

Be it known that I, IVM. M. DOTY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved lashing-Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part ot' this specication, in which- Figure l represents a longitudinal vertical section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view ofthe same.

The object ot' this invention is an improvement in that class of washing-machines which consist of some device that can readily be combined with or used in an ordinary washtub, and which allow of effecting the operation ot washing clothes by the simple motion of a lever or handle.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents a derrick, composed of two oblong square frames, a a', which are firmly united at the top. The uprights or sides ot' the frame a are connected at the bottom by a board, b, and two wings, c, extend from the ends of said board at right angles with the same toward the frame a. The frame c forms the support for the frame a, and its sides are connected at the bottom by a crossbtr, b.
B is the presser, which consists of two arms, d, suspended from a pivot, e, that has its bearings in the sides of the frame a', and said arms are connected at the bottom by transverse slats f, between which open spaces are lett for the dirty water to escape. The presser B is operated by a hand-lever, C, which has its fulcrum in a pivot, f, in the sides of the frame a, and which is provided with frictionrollers g, that work in slots lL in the arms l of the presser. India-rubber springs t', which connect the fulcrumpin e ot' the presser with the axle ot' the friction-rollers g, serve to raise the lever O whenever it has been depressed, and by the action of these springs the presser is thrown off from the board b to allow the clothes to enter between the slats f and said board. The fulcrum-pin f ot' the handlever C is adjustable in different holes j in the sides of the frame a, so that the height ot said hand-lever can be regulated to suit persons of different stature.
The operation is as follows: The derrick A is placed on the licor in an upright position, bringing the board b and the slats f 0f the presser into the interior of an ordinary washtub, as clearly shown in Fig.- ot' the drawings. The tub is partially filled with water or soap suds, and the clothes to be washed are successively entered between the presser and the board b. By imparting to the hand-lever C an oscillating motion the clothes are squeezed between the board b and the slats f, the dirty water being allowed to escape through the spaces between said slats, and by repeated motions ot the hand-lever the clothes between the board b and presser are perfectly cleansed from all dirt. B v this arrangement the washing is effected entirely by pressing and squeezing the clothes, the texture of thc fabric is not injured by rubbing, and the operation of myvdevice is very simple and easy.

What l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The derrick A, with the board b, in combination with the oscillating presser B and adjustable hand lever C, constructed and operating in the manner and for the purpose substantially as shown and described.
2. The arrangement of the adjustable handlever O with the friction-rollers g, in combination with the oscillating presser B and slots l1, constructed and operating as and for the purpose set forth.
