UNiTEn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
G'USIAVUS ADOLPHYS MILLER, OF 3UTLER, PEXXSYLYANIA.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,425, dated March 12, 1889.
Application filed October 22, 1888X Serial No. 288,733. (Model) To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUs'rAvUs ADULPHUS MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Butler, in the countv of Butler and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in \Yashing-llachines, of which the following is a specification.
Myinwntion relates to improvements in washbig-machines; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter claimed.
In the acconi )anvin drawin s Fi ure l i 4/ b D 3 D a perspective view of a washing-machine pro vided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a central vertical trai'isverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a central vertical longitudinal section.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the tub or suds-box of my improved machine, having a semicircular side and a curved bottom, as shown, and supported by the legs 1 as will be readily understood. Upon the top of the suds-box I provide the rectangular stean'i-chest C, provided on its inner faces at its upper end with the cleats 1), upon which the lid E rests and slides.
F designates a transverse strip secured to the top of the steam-chest, at one end of the same, and pro] cot ing slightly inward over the side thereof, so as to receive the edge of the lid and hold'it in place when it is drawn out to close the opening in the top of the steamchest.
G designates a board or plate secured to the top of the steam-chest and covering about half of the same and provided on its upper 5 side with the rib 11, forming a wringer-rail, 10 f beater consisting of a metallic bar having its which the clothes-wringer maybe clamped.
I designates the beater, consisting of a metallic bar bent revm'sely on itself to form the parallel branches or arms J, and having 1ts ends journalml in suitable bearings in the i described and the steam-chest or upper portion of the ma- In operation the clothes are placed in the suds-box, together with the boiling water and soap or other cleansing material, the lid closed, and the beater then rapidly rotated. It will be observed from Fig. 2 of the drawings that the beater is very nearly equal in length to the diameter of the suds-box, so that the rotation of the same will cause a thorough agitation of the clothes and will carry them around through the water and up out of the same through the steam which will collect in chine, consequently effecting a thorough and rapid cleansing of the clothes. Vhen the clothes have been cleaned, a wringer is clamped to the wringer-rail, the lid shoved back, and the clothes drawn from the sudsbox and passed through the wringer, as will be readily understood.
It will be observed that .l have provided a verysimple machine. The agitator or beater being formed of a single metallic rod and journaled in the sudsbox, without the employment of the usual shafts, leaves the interior of the suds-box free from all obstructions, so as to obviate the liability of tearing the clothes, as has been usual heretofore. The peculiar construction of the agitator, furthermore, renders it very light and at the same time very strong, so that the machine can. be easily operated to agitate the clothes.
Having th us described my in vontion, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an improvement in washing-machines, the combii'iation of the tub B, the steam-chest C secured thereon, the slidin lid in the upper portion of the steam-chest, and the rotary ends journaled in the sides of the tub and its intermediate portion bent refiexly to form a series 01. arms, which extend on opposite sides of the axis of the beater, as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in presence ot' two witnesses.
(:ESTAYITS ADOLPHUS MILLER.
