Definitions
- My invention consists in applying to the bottom of an inner sole, whether water-proof or otherwise, a iiat spring of steel or other suitable material, which shall be of sufficient stiffness to prevent doubling or crippling of the sole, and at the same time preserve its exibility and prolong its wear.
- A denotes the sole as made of Brussels carpeting or other suitable material, and with its bottom surface covered with a water-proof cement, or varnish.
- b is a iiat spring attached to the under side of the sole by means of rivets a a a a, or in any equivalentmanner. As before observed, this spring prevents doubling or crippling of the sole, and by so doing increases its length of wear, in addition to the advantages already claimed for it.

Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL BOWKER, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVED INNER SOLE FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 39,713, dated September 1, 1863.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that 1, DANIEL BowKER, of Boson, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have made a new and useful invention having reference to Inner Soles for Boots and Shoes 5 and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, lot' which* Figure 1 is a bottom view, and Fig. 2 a section. of an inner sole constructed in accordance with my invention.
An independent inner sole for boots and shoes for the purpose of keeping the feet warm and dry is in common use, and is well known. They have heretofore been made of a variety of materials, such as woolen felting, cork, 8vo., and made iexible and soft, and are very liable to trumple or double up under the foot of a person while putting on the boot or shoe containing them. The action of the foot in walk-- ing frequently has the same effect, thus causing an unpleasant feeling and pain to the foot and compelling the removal of the boot to` remedy the trouble.
My invention consists in applying to the bottom of an inner sole, whether water-proof or otherwise, a iiat spring of steel or other suitable material, which shall be of sufficient stiffness to prevent doubling or crippling of the sole, and at the same time preserve its exibility and prolong its wear.
In the drawings, A denotes the sole as made of Brussels carpeting or other suitable material, and with its bottom surface covered with a water-proof cement, or varnish. b is a iiat spring attached to the under side of the sole by means of rivets a a a a, or in any equivalentmanner. As before observed, this spring prevents doubling or crippling of the sole, and by so doing increases its length of wear, in addition to the advantages already claimed for it.
I claim as an improved article of manufac` ture- The inner sole for boots and shoes, constructed in manner and for the purpose as above described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set Iny'signature this 10th day of July, A. D. 1863.
DANL. BOWKER.
